Well can ya? You know how some old people say :

"I came to this country with 10$ in my pocket"

and then today they're some old rich farts.

So it kinda got me thinking. With the current gaps between the classes

getting further and further apart is it still possible to go from rags to riches in

America? The country where everything is possible?

The obvious answer is yes, but it's very unlikely that it will happen for most people, no matter how hard they work or how creative/shrewd/aggressive etc. they are.

Sure it's possible. But it's difficult for most people cause they don't want to work at it. Rags to comfortable-ness happens a lot more. People don't realize how much work it takes to become wealthy and most stop at an income level where they are comfortable.

Higher education has become more and more the most important statistical predictor of financial success (though by no means the only one). Social mobility is restricted to the extent that access to higher education is restricted.

The simple answer: Yes. If you are lucky enough to come up with one good idea you can spin it into millions.
The problem is that there was a time in this country where you were rewarded for hard work. Employers/Companies valued good employees.
It was possible to start out in the mail room or as a dishwasher and work your way up through the ranks of the company.
As companies have evolved into huge multinational corporations so went this concept. Corporations don't value good employees, they value where they can find the cheapest expendable labor. This is why the middle class continues to shrink.

later tonight i will try to find a link that backs up the fact
that more and more people with higher degrees are not working in their field
because book smarts hardly translates into practical work abilities

anybody who wants to can get ahead
I have
life is what you make of it
especially when all you do is make excuses and blame 'whitey' for keeping you down
My father is a retired cop
instead of sitting in a house drinking his retirement away, llike alot of his crew, he picked up a hammer
next thing you know, in about 6 years he is building Million dollar second homes for Wall St types
he drives a Bentley Flying Spur and Continental GT, a mercedes 500 series and 3 other 'normal' vehicles
his clients think he is an *******, but he says what he does and does what he says. When he screws up, he eats it, when his clients screw up he bans them from their own home until it is completed
and they are pleased with the results because his entire business is generated by referrals

virtually anybody willing to do what it takes can make it
in my experience tho, like Kelzie said, most people are looking for security and stability. Therefor the earn modest incomes
I have only had a couple of jobs that paid salary in my life
I earn what I generate, and i go hungry if i dont

my neighbor is a surveyor. He has a tremendous people personality, more knowledge of the local are than I do, and would make a tremendous realtor, even better than myself
but he can not live life on commission
and while he makes a very respectable paycheck, he could easily quadruple it by becoming a salesman
He chooses not to, out of fear and insecurity
and will remain middle class for life because he is not willing to do what it takes to get ahead

I think you can do it, but it's much harder today than all those years ago.

Yes it can be done.
Not necessarily by winning the Lottery although however remote that is, it is still possible.
The only restrictions to Higher Education are inability and cold hard cash.
You are not restricted through Color, Class, or even income.
However statistically it is doubtful that even if you reach a top class University and pass with flying colors that you will attain leadership of any company.
You are more likely to become a Company CEO, CFO if you attended some small virtually unknown College.
One way to become filthy rich is by getting into the Banking system.
Another way is by inventing a device that sells worldwide, or by giving a service.
But if you think that because one might not have any scholastic ability and that that would prevent one from becoming wealthy, well u could try becoming a Politician (when have u ever seen a poor Politician) or failing that become a Plumber.
I know a man in England without any education who is now a multii millionaire, he started off by lifting a Hod carrier full of bricks up to the bricklayers, difference was he carried 4 times as many bricks per load as anyone else, so he made more money.

A. If you play the lottery you will probably never prosper.

B. Of course, it's harder now than it used to be. Now the government takes almost half of what you earn.

C. Rich is relative. I know a man who inherited six million dollars and frittered it away in an attempt to get rich. Me, I would have thought six million was rich enough.

winning the lottery.

there is that movie out now about that guy that lived in a subway bathroom w/ his son that is now rich. i forgot the name though.

"The Pursuit of Happyness" A very good movie, my wife and went on a date Firday night to watch it and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Inspirational story (based on a true story) of what happens when you work hard, sacrifice and are willing to do stand by your word.

Show this to be something other than class-warfare rhetoric.

Is it still possible to go from rags to riches in America?
Absolutely.

Can you still go from rags to riches in America?

Of course.

It's possible to do that in just about any society. More in America than most, IMO.

Sure just look at Christopher Gardner the inspiration for Will Smith's new movie the Pursuit of Happyness.

Christopher Gardner - Official Web Site

It takes an incredible brain, drive, ingenuity, creativity, luck, and help from those around you.

It's also possible to go from riches to rags!

and have some luck

...Its also possible to survive being shot multiple times in the chest. That does not however mean that either is likely to happen and should not be relied upon. Low probability events like this do happen, but they reflect on the populace as a whole. For the average joe who is poor, they probably will stay poor or maybe go to lower middle class if they work at it. A hard working dedicated person can determine their economic status to a degree. But that degree is not terribly large.

typical short sightedness of the failures of society
lets look at all the immigrants
the first generation sacrificed and did what it took to provide the basic necessities for their children, so they could have a better life
the second generation with the better education are able to raise children who are more assimilated into the country in which they live
they get a higher education and better jobs
it is mostly bitter losers who sit on teh bottom rung of society generation after generation
and they should just be weeded out of the gene pool
which is what living in constant poverty and ignorance does

why is it that the Cradle of Life (africa) is a destitute **** hole
while the countries that followed, by the adventurous that left africa are successful and have contributed so much more to the world in terms of medicine, science, philosophy etc....
some people just dont deserve to be in the gene pool
that is why there is Survival of the Fittest
Nature at its finest
if you deserve to survive you thrive
We decimated Japan in WWII and look at them now

Actually poor people have a lot more kids than rich people do.

Africa is a destitute hellhole because its political structure is violently at odds with its cultural structure. It wasn't a hell hole for most of its existence.

I didn't know we had a social darwinist on the forum, interesting. Africa has higher population growth than European countries do, therefor nullifying your argument.

hows that AIDS death rate working out for them?

Watching the movie it sure didn't seem like he had any luck but bad, everything Gardner got he earned.

i didn't see the movie but to go from homeless to rich is going to take hard work and some luck. not everyone has that opportunity.

Agreed, also it was just a movie, not like I can really draw conclusive opinions about going from rags to riches from that.
