Is it ever ok to lie? Is telling a a lie ever the right thing to do, considering certain situations and circumstances?
The noble lie is a religious myth told to the people to motivate them to do what is good and right. Without this religious belief they would not behave in a good fashion even if this was what was ultimately in their best interests. It was no use explaining to them why they should behave well because they would not understand. Plato did not have a very good opinion of the ordinary man or woman. He thought mankind should be ruled by super-intelligent Guardians who would know what was right to do. Ordinary people could not rule because they could not be trusted to do what was right. Democracy, said Plato, is the rule of the mob.
To be fair to Plato, he was not entirely convinced that the rulers could be trusted with the truth: "might we contrive one of those opportune falsehoods ... so as by one noble lie to persuade if possible the rulers themselves, but failing that the rest of the city." Persuade the rulers of the truth of the lie and it would be all the more successful!
There's a fine line there between alcolhol consumption and beauty my friend.Scarecrow Akhbar said:Depends on how many beers you've had, how long it's been since you've last had a woman, and what she looks like, I guess.

Man: "I had to work late" (when actually he stopped off for some beer with his buddies.)
Woman: "The baby is yours"

Captain America said:My bad. All this time I thought I was plagerizing my teen-age son.
Chris Rock is funny. Did you guys catch where he had the highest score on that kiddy Wannabe award? Sure, he's funny but I was kinda surprised that his adoring audience was so young. Little bitty kids want to be Chris Rock. Go figure. He's XXX.
I don't know who I'm gonna be plagerizing next but I'll tell you the story anyhow.....
Question: Honey does this dress make me look fat?
Lie: No sweetheart. It looks great on you. It would look better though, if it was laying on the floor around your ankles. (Chances are, she's gonna change it anyways. But you MIGHT get lucky.)
Truth: No honey. The dress don't make you look fat. Your a$$ is what makes you look fat. Here, have a twinkie.
But back to the question.............................
Hmmmmmmm........<Cap'n rubs his chin in deep thought>..........lie. And lie often.

It's all a function of our obligations. While honor is always best served by the truth, there are times when greater moral obligations apply. I would give false intelligence to my country's enemies-- in the unlikely even that I'm in such a position-- and I would lie in a court of law to protect my family.
Lying to spare someone's feelings ain't necessarily wrong, but most of the time, it's hiding the truth from someone who could use it. They might get stung at first, but the truth is usually more beneficial to them in the long run.
There are cases where a moral obligation to the truth exists-- particularly in journalism, education, and government-- and in those cases, I don't think it's ever acceptable to lie.

A man may think that it is OK to lie - a little - on the short term - on little things..
But this is flawed logic.
To lie a little ? Or to lie a lot, in reality there is no difference.
To lie on the short term ?
Same as above.
On little things ?
Define "little" !
Man should aspire to be good, he cannot do this by lying, ever, on anything.
It can be said that lying is the throwing away of moral values. No man is able to know when to stop lying - so why start ??
But there are judgmental people who will force a lie.
For instance . With a child who just did something "bad", the parents asks the child "did you do this "bad" thing ??"
Out of fear, the child will lie. Remove the fear, and the child will not lie ! Telling the truth is normal and natural. But very few parents are capable of not being judgemental, of not instilling fear.....
This applies to Bill Clinton as well, he, of course is subject to fear and lied.
The sex question should NEVER have been asked. The ones responsible for this are just as shameful as Clinton !
And yes, I have lied, out of fear, and I also know that there is "NO EXCUSE", and the question put to be was legitimate and necessary.
Like Clinton, I am human, corrupted by fear...
That so many thinks it is OK to lie tells me that man has a long ways to go..
My name is tinkerbell and I expel fairy dust from my posterior oriface. :rofl:tecoyah said:Never....I have never lied and never will....
