I'm sitting here watching the game, and on comes a Fed X commercial. It takes place in a office setting -- and one of the workers is sitting there wearing a sweatshirt that says, "I'm Retarded -- And Lovin' It."

What the hell??? I swear I think the ad industry is full of coke heads.

Do you think this is appropriate???

The purpose of ads is to get you interested and talking about the product any way they can. Looks like it worked.

If the shirt said, "I'm doin' yo mama," I'd be talking about it, too. Good grief.

@ SE102 -- Federal Express commercial. Guess you'd have to wait 'til you see it.

Does it matter? It's a commercial. Their POINT is to be "edgy" so you'll think their product is fit for you and you'll want to buy it. Marketing IS manipulation.

Why waste neurons thinking about it?

It's politically incorrect to use the word "retarded." I find the fact that a fine company like Fed X is using it in an advertisement to be over the top. When you read next week that it was pulled, you can say you read it here first. ;-)

No problem, Hoplite. I have plenty of neurons to waste. ;-)

Again, who cares? There are far bigger things in this world to worry about rather than a quasi-acceptable insult in one commercial.

I wasn't going to respond, but will anyway. You know who cares? The moms and dads of kids that are mentally handicapped. The sisters and brothers who see their siblings picked on at school and called REtard. It's a fight for respect they fight every single day for their kids. It's a fight that sometimes sends 'em to bed cryin'. It's inappropriate and completely insensitive.

Don't know why you don't get that. As to there being far bigger things to worry about in the world than this, well, I'll champion "the least of us" and be proud of it. Perhaps you, on the other hand, would like to shop for a sweatshirt like that for someone YOU know.

The world is filled with a lot worse things than demeaning names. Instead of wasting time trying to police people's language, you could focus on providing a support structure for people that DO feel hurt by this kind of language.

I was in Special Ed during school, I'm more than familiar with how cruel kids can be to other kids whose minds work a little differently. Kids and adults will ALWAYS be cruel to each other and call each other names, it's human nature, it's how we are designed to work.

I think I'd rather have food in my stomach and be called a retard rather than be hungry and have every body be extra special nice to me.

I mean, maybe my priorities are screwy from being called a retard so many times as a kid, but I consider it a worse problem when a kid has no food or is getting the crap kicked out of him by his parents.

Hoplite, I feel really strongly about this because I have an aunt who is Down's Syndrome and a best friend whose son is mentally handicapped and will never be able to live alone. She's called me crying about her son soooo many times -- the way he's treated by others. Maybe I'm just too close to it.

But that really can't be it, because you're close to it as well. And, coming from you on this subject, maybe I've learned something else on DP. Perhaps I'll have to unbunch my panties. I love the way you put it. And that's the real truth. Thank you.

It's possible, it's a touchy subject for some people and while that is understandable, people need to be careful to recognize their own prejudices and leans so they can correct them so as to avoid tainting an objective decision.

I also take a very low view of most other people's opinions, also, I'm a polyamorous Pagan Socialist, I get far more namecalling on other aspects of my personality :)

I'm glad you got something out of these kinds of exchanges and I'm very happy to see someone willing to admit to having readjusted their views based on new information or a new viewpoint.
