Is Civilization Breaking Down?

Do you believe we're entering a downward spiral phase in global history?

I hope you're right but the signs are pointing elsewhere.
What signs? Life expectancy is solid, technology keeps enabling more fantastical and wonderful things, and more human beings have been lifted out of poverty in the last 30 years than ever before. Sure some nations like the United States are declining powers and will struggle a bit, but on the balance things are great these days.

The world is a mess but it was predicted long ago...simply the sign of the times...

Face it, modern civilization cannot continue to propagate unless it somehow stabilizes better than it currently proposes. It's merely a situation of sustained proposals.

In my 50+ yrs on this planet, I've never seen so many disruptions and crises occurring simultaneously and concurrently. The natural disasters with fires and hurricanes, social and civic unrest over political ideologies, pandemic caused business failures and global supply chain shortages, and now military conflict in Europe.

The world is changing dramatically and fast, and not all for the better.
Civilization is not breaking down, but the political order of the world is.

In the early 19th century after the Napoleonic wars the Europeans created a new international order at the Congress of Vienna, this order survived until world war 1, where there was then a transitional period until 1945 when the GAE (global American empire) took its place, now the GAE is breaking down, and the new order has not yet emerged.

Yes and isn’t it amazing how tens if not hundreds of millions of us not only recognize this but are working day in and day out to address it? What other species recognizes long term risks and acts so far in advance to mitigate them?! Heck, we are scanning the cosmos to ensure what happened to the dinosaurs does not happen to us. That’s incredible!

I’m excited to think in a century’s time we’ll be spreading through the solar system.

What signs? Life expectancy is solid,
No, it’s not. In fact in many societies it’s declining
technology keeps enabling more fantastical and wonderful things,
No. It is not, in fact technology is largely stagnated, and what advancements there are, are oriented towards addicting people and selling their data.

Temporarily, that will come crashing down with the GAE.
Sure some nations like the United States are declining powers and will struggle a bit, but on the balance things are great these days.
And when the struggle turns to collapse billions will die across the world

We survived Obama but cannot survive those who voted for him TWICE. Biden is an asterisk on that truth.

You are a refreshingly positive opportunist. I hope you're right.

Yes it is. In many societies it’s increasing.

Yes, it is. It is doing anything but stagnating, And has enabled many wonderful things.

Who cares about the GAE? I mean sure I’ve made good coin off it but I’ll do fine in the next order as well.
And when the struggle turns to collapse billions will die across the world
Nice. What’s your prognostication? Robot apocalypse or zombies? Or is this just one of those “I hate modern life because women should stay in the kitchen and gay people are an affront!” phases you’re working through?

Look at Trumpism and answer anything but, "yes, we have passed our apex" and your vote is either lying or ignorant.

Yes it is. In many societies it’s increasing.
Many very poor societies it may increase to a point below the peak of wealthy western countries, but in many rich societies it is decreasing

No, in fact much modern technology has actually accelerated social decline and enabled social pathologies. Child pornography was near non existent 30 years ago for example, and now a market has been created for exploiting kids and which requires extensive law enforcement and prosecutorial resources.

So called “women’s lib” is in fact accelerating social decline because it drives down wages, wastes substantial education resources, and results in fewer children, which is changing societies for the worse.

It’s not hard to be optimistic if one looks at the whole. Also, it’s important for me that my career and profession bring good to the world, and how can I do that if I think we’re all doomed. So yeah I look for the positive and try to always keep in mind that every problem or ill is just another thing to be solved.

The world does!
Well, we care that you all have money to buy what we produce and if we live in a small, weak country we care that America might launch an invasion. Does that count as caring about America?

You live in the here and now and are the hope of our future, Proceed and overcome.

Pornography of any stripe was far less accessible 30 years ago. Pornography of every stripe has skyrocketed in the past 30 years. That's the downside, one of the downsides, of the internet becoming accessible to low-functioning dimwits.

Porn is only bad for the self-righteous and dimly lit.

That’s a big downside I think. See computers have created social pathologies that exceed the benefit they provide

But they muddy the water.
I remember when the internet was three things- ftp, Usenet and the www, world wide web. FTP was basically just a channel for university students and researchers to exchange information, Usenet was thousands of discussion groups, each with a pretty narrow focus, and the World Wide Web was where companies and schools and charities and everyone with a message published what they wanted the world to see.
It all went for a shit after AOL and Web-TV gave an instant worldwide voice to people who are routinely ignored in the shop lunchroom.

Tears for Fears era was golden. ; )

Maybe, maybe not. Part of it is the internet and 24 hour news cycle making us all more aware of all the bad things happening in the world all the time.

These things have always been happening, you just weren't as exposed to the information.
As far as extreme weather events, while we always had them, it's the frequency & ferocity that is new. With what would have been 100 yr. storms every time you turn around.
Man Made Climate Change...
