I don't think what we're seeing going on politically and culturally in this nation is just another round of "disagreements"....I think it's deeper than that.

A house divided against itself will not stand....Abraham Lincoln

What's at stake is the very essence of what these United States represents and how it will go forward. If much of the Left gets it's way, Socialism will become the mainstream accepted way of handling social issues. Government will become the sole controller of most economic and social structure and resources. Christianity will become a discouraged if not penalized institution.
The military will be sidelined and diminished in favor of expanded social welfare programs benefiting the selected groups.

While democrats have advocated open borders, reduced US global influence, less use of domestic energy resources, heavy burdens of government regulations supposedly to curb global warming, and trade policies that do not put the USA first, Republicans generally go the opposite direction. You decide which direction is best for America.

Today we are extremely politically, racially, economically and culturally divided and some historians site this as one of the prime catalysts of the Civil War of the 1800's.
However, the fracturing today is on even more fronts and issues than in the 1800's.

Perman and Taylor (2010) say that historians are of two minds on why millions of men seemed so eager to fight, suffer and die over four years:

Some historians emphasize that Civil War soldiers were driven by political ideology, holding firm beliefs about the importance of liberty, Union, or state rights, or about the need to protect or to destroy slavery. Others point to less overtly political reasons to fight, such as the defense of one's home and family, or the honor and brotherhood to be preserved when fighting alongside other men. Most historians agree that no matter what a soldier thought about when he went into the war, the experience of combat affected him profoundly and sometimes altered his reasons for continuing the fight.[117]

Are we not already at a point of severe disunity?
Do you see all these differences as simply "resolving" themselves?
It seems each year is bringing an escalation. During the Obama years, most of the protesting was done online. VERY few open public outbursts or disruptions of civil order were seen.
In stark contrast, the very nomination of Trump has set the left into very public, very disruptive and often very violent public demonstrations. The right did not attempt to sway the electoral college the way the left recently did.

Those calling themselves Progressive or Liberal are in fact waging an increasing resistance to those calling themselves Conservatives or Right wing.
Will the left settle down or will the right simply cave in and gradually accept all the left demands?
Or, will all this eventually culminate in a 2nd American Civil War?

Following the model established by the CIA's efforts to train "moderate rebels" in Syria, a San Francisco company is now paying "moderate rebels" to engage in violence at the Trump inauguration.
There's going to be a terrorist attack at the inauguration. That's my prediction. And it's going to involve liberals.

The website, which says that the company has provided 1,817 operatives for 48 campaigns, promises “deniability,” assuring clients that “we can ensure that all actions will appear genuine to media and public observers.”

“We are strategists mobilizing millennials across the globe with seeded audiences and desirable messages,” says the website. “With absolute discretion a top priority, our operatives create convincing scenes that become the building blocks of massive movements. When you need the appearance of outrage, we are able to deliver it at scale while keeping your reputation intact.”

I find the idea of civil war dubious. Civil disturbances yes.... we've already seen some of that. It might get worse. Civil war, though, I am skeptical.

There is no denying we are a nation of sharply divided ideologies, visions of the future, and perspectives on the present. The power of the Fedgov in general, and the office of President in particular, has grown to the point that one side panics when the other side secures control of the White House, fearing severe consequences to their own lifestyle and agenda.

It wasn't supposed to be that way. The central government was never intended to be so powerful that the average citizen feared for his personal liberty if the "wrong" people were in control.

I could hope both sides will wake up and realize this needs to be addressed and corrected, but that is probably far too optimistic.

Sometimes I wonder if separatism may be the only peaceful answer to our stark political divide, however.

So do you think this is part of a developing Civil War or just ongoing differences that will eventually work themselves out?

I agree mostly. Just wondering what others think of how far this could go without becoming Civil War.

The left is demanding violence and have frequently resorted to it. That the people who own guns have shown such restraint so far is remarkable in and of itself. However with liberals openly plotting violent terrorist attack and expressing sympathy for ISIS, I would say we are on the verge of Civil War. Liberals are likely going to fire the first shot during Trump's inauguration.

Re: Is Civil War already in progress...or are we just to be a severely divided nation

There is a civil war in process, but it is not a physical war, it is a psychological one.
Ever sense the Establishment understood the power of the media to control peoples minds, it has waged a war designed to enslave the people of America.

The people who succumb to the propaganda are the liberals, while the people who resist the propaganda are the conservatives.
By saying conservative, I do not mean Republican, as many Republicans are liberals.
The conservatives are the Libertarians who reject the government, and the Establishment who owns them.

More and more people are beginning to challenge the status quo, and so you see hostility from the people who support it.
The Establishment has their hooks deep into the liberals and will say or do anything to keep their hold on power and monopoly.
Will the psychological war become a physical war? Perhaps.... Like I said, the Establishment will do anything to hold onto power.

I find it interesting that several people seem to believe it is only the Liberals that are involved or to blame where it may all lead, take two to tango folks. And we wonder why we are where we are today as a Nation, when both sides start using the word Traitor when talking about the other guys then yes a war does become more than likely. Be care what you wish for, more Americans died in the first Civil War than all other wars America has fought Combined, and another one would eclipse that by many times. We shall see but it does not look good, and if one did break out how would one define their territory as we are all mixed in together, it would be a free for all fight. Before jumping on the bandwagon consider those you love, many would not survive a civil war, is that a chance you want to take, really?

Yes. The nation has two very different views on humans, responsibility, ethics and the Constitution.
It is interesting in many ways.

There isn't going to be a civil war. Yes, we are divided but the vast majority of the conflict that results from that is limited to social media.
