When Bush doesn't leave, then I'll vote yes. Until then...

(Anxiously awaits Billo to link leftwing Patriot Act and Military Commisions Act articles)

I believe that Bush would love to be a dictator. Look how he ignore the wishes of the American people in fiscal and foreign policies. Bush and his right wing chronies tried to sneak a one party system in on us, but we caught them this time. We need to closely watch our government, left of right, to make sure we keep our wonderful democracy.

The whole American political system is rotten to the core. Who knows who is REALLY behind the republican party? It wouldnt surprise me if its some kind of group of people that are heavily involved in the republican partys politics over decades. I am sure the democratic party would have something about equal to this problem.

:doh Well, I'd say, yup, probably to the bolded part.

Well, that didnt sound deep enough by far. I mean that they have a long plan, and that plan carries on independent of who the president is. The president is just a puppet who helps them carry out the plan who had nothing to do with what the president wants or care about. Imagine Bush going to Iraq on someone elses "order"?

I think that's always a danger. Which is one of the main reasons behind my full support of gun ownership and lack of support of gun control laws.

The Patriot Act, to be honest, scares the crap out of me. It's totalitarian in nature, and I cannot believe that we - as a people - have allowed it to remain in place. My absolute favorite quote on the matter:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin

Unfortunately, we know at least a good portion of the people behind the Republican party are Dominionist Christians whose stated purpose is to take over the world and impose Christianity on everyone. George Bush is one of them.

If thats true they have done it in a better way than the Nazis, but they have also based all their ways on knowledge of where the Nazis failed and where they succeeded.

I'm more concerned with a Theocracy than a Dictatorship, the former seems far more likely.

The tin foil hat wearers will say we are becoming a dictatorship.

We are not becoming a dictatorship until Bush doesn't leave office.

The possibility and concern should always be present though, so that we never become a dictatorship.

Theocracy is even worse. *shudder* And I agree that we do seem closer to that than any kind of dictatorship.

I don't remember the exact quote or who said it, something along the lines of:

"When fascism comes to America it will come bearing a cross and wrapped in an American flag."

I doubt a generalization like this can be anything but. Sure panickers should be ignored, but not at the cost of ignoring traits of said government type. To ignore any and all signs just welcomes those that truely want a theocracy or dictatorship to push more through the cracks.

Nonesense question.

HEY! I used to have that in my sig. ;) (or did you know that? LOL)

Sinclair Lewis.

Well lets see:

We have a "President" who believes that he is not accountable for his actions

We have a "President" who believes that onces he makes a decision, that decision should not be questioned by anyone including a democratically elected congress (after all....he has told us all that he is "THE DECIDER")

We have a "President" who believes that he is not accountable to the people of this Country.

We have a "President" who has engaged in unwarranted domestic spying via wiretaps and then fought against there being any kind of paper trail (warrant after the fact) to ensure that he is not held accountable for any wrongdoing.

We have a "President" who orders the firing of independent prosecutors who are found to be investigating corruption.

We have a "President" who has selectively sought to appoint activist conservative judges to the bench to promote his socially conservative/right-wing agenda.

We have a "President" that argues for increased police action over civil rights via the Patriot Act.

We have a "President" who condones the use of torture

We have a President who condones various other departures from the Geneva Convention

We have a "President" who has thumbed his nose at our allies and has isolated us from much of the rest of the world.

We have a "President" who was appointed in 2000 after he assured everyone despite what every poll said....that his brother (Governor of the State) promised that he would "win" the state....and the right-wing Secretary of State governing the election assured it as well.....

Yeah......sounds like we are getting dangerously close to a dictatorship.....At least in the brain of GWB.....in actuality I think the Congress and the people of this country would awaken before it could actually happen.....but when you read the apologists who walk in step and line with their leader....it is a kind of scary thought that there are people in this country that would allow it to happen. It makes it understandable how the third reich could have actually evolved.

I knew I'd seen it in a sig somewhere, didn't know it was you though. How close was I on the words?

Close enough :)

When facism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. ~ Sinclair Lewis

Anyone who voted "Absolutely, we need to act now" listens to too much Air America. I voted "I highly doubt it". A "slide to dictatorship" is, if present at all, very, very subtle, and I think we've got bigger things to sweat about.
