Iraqi VP narrowly escapes assassination - Yahoo! News

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq's Shiite vice president narrowly escaped assassination Monday as a blast ripped through a government meeting hall just hours after it was searched by U.S. teams with bomb-sniffing dogs. At least 10 people were killed.

Adel Abdul-Mahdi was slightly wounded in the explosion, which splintered chairs, destroyed a speakers' podium and sent a chilling message that suspected Sunni militants can strike anywhere despite a major security crackdown across Baghdad.

As U.S. forces sealed off the area around the municipal building, investigators grappled with the troubling question of how the bomb was smuggled into the ministry of public works — a seven-story structure with crack surveillance systems from its days as offices for Saddam Hussein's feared intelligence service.

I think this would be a good time to put cameras in that building...

In reading their Constitution I don't even see a VP section. ????

You read the entire Iraqi constitution? Wow you have time anyways.....I only read the first 3 pages and fell asleep. It's like reading the Qu'ran with some legal wording thrown in for good measure. Here is what I found the most confusing..

(a) No law can be passed that contradicts the undisputed rules of Islam.

(b) No law can be passed that contradicts the principles of democracy.

(c) No law can be passed that contradicts the rights and basic freedoms outlined in this constitution.

Islam and Democracy/Freedom aren't exacly compatible in all aspects.

The Iraqi Constiturion is one of appeasement. It tries to console the conservative traditional islamic people with basic western standards. I feel sorry for the guys who had to write it. I hope Iraq will eventually be stable enough to further develop their system independently, much like Germany could a decade from WWII.

Go to the part that guarantees freedom of all religions and equal rights to all people within regardless of religion.

Isn't this in direct contradiction to the laws of Islam? You know what I'm talking about...the infidels and all that ;)

The Iraqi Constitution has alot of built in safe guards.

I dont know how safe they are considering that the consitution has this on the first page

(a) No law can be passed that contradicts the undisputed rules of Islam.

Undisputed....No law can be passed....strong words...I dont think there is anyway around that.

It also says that no law may contradict democratic principles and that the constitution accepts all human rights conventions.

Yes but thats exacly what I'm talking about. There is no room in islamic law for democratic principles. Atleast not in the way phrased in the constitution. They're basically saying there is no law above that of islam(Sharia).

But they minimize Sharia through other safeguards like the ones I mentioned. The inverse of your assertion is also true, there is no room for Islamic laws in a nation based on Democratic principles which excepts all human rights treaties.

So their consitution is one big contradiction.

I would say it's more of a compromise in which Sharia is intentionally minimized through built in safe guards.

Yes but so is democracy. Remember...no law that contradicts islam shall be passed...and now law that contradicts democracy shall be passed either.... It's funny cause I'd love to see them have some issue concerning the hijab....that would be intereting to see.
