FALLUJA/RAMADI Iraq (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein loyalists who violently opposed January elections have made an about-face as Thursday's polls near, urging fellow Sunni Arabs to vote and warning al Qaeda militants not to attack.
In a move unthinkable in the bloody run-up to the last election, guerrillas in the western insurgent heartland of Anbar province say they are even prepared to protect voting stations from fighters loyal to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq.

Graffiti calling for holy war is now hard to find.

Instead, election campaign posters dominate buildings in the rebel strongholds of Ramadi and nearby Falluja, where Sunnis staged a boycott or were too scared to vote last time around.

"We want to see a nationalist government that will have a balance of interests. So our Sunni brothers will be safe when they vote," said Falluja resident Ali Mahmoud, a former army officer and rocket specialist under Saddam's Baath party.

"Sunnis should vote to make political gains. We have sent leaflets telling al Qaeda that they will face us if they attack voters."

In my opinion...there will be civil war regardless of when we pull out, it seems inevitable.

Let's see how the Sunnis respond if/when the election doesn't go their way.

You sound almost giddy in hopes that their democracy fails.

It can't work.... Then there will be nobody or nothing to blame on te President or the US.....

Right. Failure in Iraq is essential for political gain. Good thing red state America knows better.

It'd be really sad if that's true. Especially since the democrats haven't come up with a viable plan for stabilization and exit strategy.

Exactly why Bush won't give a timetable to withdraw the troops.

Well, they have a plan for leaving, thats for sure.
But as far as stabaliziation? Any plan they come up with will be remarkabl;y similar to what is going on now.

Remember Kerry's plan in 2004? He planned to do the things the Bush administration was already doing -- and then he criticized the Bush administration for offering 'more of the same'.

It is very plain to see. The campaign season has begun and the left is desperate to regain power. A failed Iraq is their only hope - the cause, the troops and the good people of Iraq be damned.

It is plain to see. This Administration made huge mistakes in rushing into this war, and is desparate to maintain face. Maintaining forces in Iraq is their only hope - the cause, the troops and the good people of Iraq be damned. Not as if they gave a damn about them in the first place.

Well no..

Because giving a timetable is a stupid thing to do.... THats why....

Cute, but of course I said the left and not the administration. Like I said before, red state America understands - despite your spin.

Recall the last time that Howard Dean was on Meet The Press, about a month ago? At Russert's questions about Dem proposed solutions to Iraq instead of criticisms, Dean refused to offer any, maintaining that it wasn't the Dems postion or responsibility to do so. He did say that they would have some by the November '06 mid-term elections.

Clearly, the light is on but there is nobody at home.

:rofl When I saw this thread on the posting board I only saw "Iraq: Doomed to failure!!" and I was gearing up to tear apart another leftist rant. The "Oh... wait.." part was a nice surprise.

This is a very good example of just how desperate the left is. Note this is pure hyperbole and totally baseless. It is a hope, a hope for failure no matter what the cost so that political power can be gained.

I agree that civil war is the future of Irag. Iraq is already a failure. Bush is a failure

From a pro-war point of view, I agree.

Baseless opinions, all. But we are used to your posts.

That's for history to decide, not you.

NO.. From an IQ over 4 point of view.

There is no way you can pinpoint to the day when these people are going to be ready in skill and numbers to protect there own country. And if the president gives that date and it is 1 minute late he will be crucified everyday.

Correct.
The left wants to pin Bush down on a date for nothing other than their own political benifit.

Which explains why he won't do it. US forces are required to support the Iraqi government, which is why he will not withdraw them. Ss long as US forces are there, there will be a resistance. It is a self-fulfilling justification to maintain troops so he will not be (even more) crucified.

And Bushc will not be pinned down to a date US will withdraw for his own political benefit.
