Iran’s foreign minister on Thursday fired back at Sen. Tom Cotton’s series of tweets calling for a debate on the U.S. Constitution, a day after the freshman Arkansas Republican proposed that the two meet in Washington to debate “Iran’s record of tyranny, treachery and terror.”
Mohammad Javad Zarif responded, congratulating Cotton on the birth on Monday of his son, Gabriel.

“Serious diplomacy, not macho personal smear, is what we need,” Zarif tweeted Thursday. “Congrats on Ur new born. May U and Ur family enjoy him in peace .@SenTomCotton
Cotton’s tweets followed remarks by Zarif at New York University on Wednesday, in which he said United Nations sanctions would be lifted if there is a nuclear deal, “whether Sen. Cotton likes it or not.”

Cotton followed up his challenge with a tweet noting that he would “understand” if the foreign minister declined because “after all, in your 20s, you hid in US during Iran-Iraq war while peasants & kids were marched to death.”

This is just flat out idiotic on Tom Cotton's part. Diplomacy is not about who has the biggest swinging dick. The is just petty and pathetic. The sad thing is that these kind of comments register with a lot of people as legitimate political and diplomatic discussion. This could of been a lot worse, but luckily someone in the discussion put their big boy pants on and took the high road.

Meanwhile, Iran is procuring nuclear materials under the table using a covert network linked to two blacklisted firms.

Which just goes to show what a fraud Iran's diplomacy is, a cynical kabuki of delay and obfuscation. You and President Obama are fools to regard any of it seriously or spend even a second of time on it. With every passing day the danger grows.

Tom Cotton has the right idea.

Tom Cotton's "right idea" is to trash talk on Twitter?!? :lamo Diplomacy, Republican style! More like a pissed of teen.

Tom Cotton has the right idea.

Perhaps, but he has to be a lot more mature about how to handle it in order to accomplish what he believes is right. Running to twitter with vapid insults is what little kids do. He's a US Senator, for God's sake, he needs to act a lot more intelligently than this.

Here is how it started. ;)

Tom Cotton Challenges Iran's Foreign Minister to a Debate on The Constitution Via Twitter.....

Nearly two months after firing off a letter to the Islamic Republic of Iran warning any nuclear deal that isn't approved by Congress will be temporary, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton is going after Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif directly via Twitter.

Hey @JZarif, I hear you called me out today. If you’re so confident, let’s debate the Constitution. 1/4

Tom Cotton
✔ ‎@SenTomCotton
Here’s offer: meet in DC, @JZarif, time of your choosing to debate Iran’s record of tyranny, treachery, & terror. 2/4.....snip~

Heya Ikari. :2wave: Yeah Eli Lake jumped in on that too.

I hope @SenTomCotton takes the high road too. Maybe congratulate @jzarif for Iran hitting the 1000 executions mark so quickly under Rouhani......snip~

Let me know when Tom Cotton is going to go after Saudi Arabia for their executions and, as he put it their record "of tyranny, treachery, & terror."..

Saudi Arabia isn't an enemy to those in the US and to the US.....at the moment that is. When you can show they have declared publicly and openly like Iran has. We can let you know.

Cotton is little more than insecure teenager trying to impress his friends at the mall with how tough he is. He is perfect example of why U.S. foreign policy is so awful. The Iranian government is a repressive theocracy, but they actually under how diplomacy works. They don't have random idiots in their government undermining their own leadership and they have diplomats who actually understand the meaning of self control. Its downright embarrassing that a country run by religious extremists is more reasonable about international relations than half the U.S. government at the moment.

Screw Iran and screw Tom Cotton.

he should have steered clear from the personal insult, to be sure.

in a very odd turn, Cotton is actually on the same side as Obama and Kerry when it comes to statements made by Zarif ( primarily about the timing of lifting sanctions)

He gives Iran all the respect and decorum they deserve. There is no honor or dignity in being fooled by an obvious bunch of criminals and liars. A crude insult is what they deserve.

Sometimes the occasion calls for a rude retort. Getting lectured to by a sorry, sorry pack of criminals who chant "Death to America" every day is such a time.

By the way, when Zarif congratulated Cotton on the birth of his son he was not "taking the high road" as the OP so stupidly implied, he was making a threat.

I don't think that was a thread, and our politicians are representations of ourselves, I don't want to come off and ignorant and childish. There may indeed be reasons to be wary of this deal or the intentions of Iran, but we can handle that with a bit more diplomatic tact than this, I think. Stay classy, sort of thing. It isn't DP, it's actual diplomatic politics, so I think it needs to be addressed on a higher level.

Then again, I just hate Twitter in general anyway.

nice deflection.. well done.

Its not a deflection. If this was all about human rights records Tom better get tweeting @ some more foreign officials

:lamo
So one day Iran is a joke and deserves no respect, and the next day is that we should be terrified by them.

Thanks for proving my point. Hypocrisy at its finest.

it was a deflection....no doubt about it.

need I remind you of the topic of your thread?

Yeah it was.
yepp.gif
As I didn't hear any claim that this was all about human Rights records.

Tom Cotton has the potential to be far more dangerous, destructive, and disastrous than dickless Cheney .

TDS's comparison is spot on.

The GOP of hypocrisy had Iran/Contra going on at the same time as Rumsfeld was selling arms and bowing to his friend Saddam.
We support ALL executioners when it suits us.

IKE was very unpopular with his own party for calling them out on the MIC wasn't he ?

it was a deflection and you are rambling.

Just as Iran enjoyed the support of the GOP in overthrowing an elected government and installing the Shah in the 1950s--short memory Thrilla?

Or when Iran was supported by the felonious Reagan during the 1980s with Iran/Contra.

Iran appreciates your support.

Do you support this freshman turd of a Senator calling for a new war with Iran?

And why the personal insult at me supporting Iran Thrilla?
Can't you debate matters without going personal on folks and accusing them of a blatant irrational lie (BIL) ?
