Interestingly enough, it seems that, even before the Iraq War had begun, the Bush administration was laying the groundwork for war against Iran. It also seems that one of the central figures in this plan was Larry Franklin, later arrested for espionage against the United States.

Article is here.

Ok, gotta attack the messenger here, but only a little bit. Bamford has written a couple of decent books in the past("The Puzzle Palace", "Body of Secrets", "Pretext for War"). but it has been a long time. His first two were pretty informative, with lots of info from FOIA filings and inside sources; his last much too long on speculation and quite overblown - IMO. He seems pretty desperate to get something back on the book list. In his haste, he has written stuff like the following (from the article cited):

There was only one small problem: The MEK had been certified by the State Department as a terrorist organization. In fact, the White House was in the midst of negotiations with Tehran, which was offering to extradite five members of Al Qaeda thought to be of high intelligence value in return for Washington's promise to drop all support for the MEK.

Oops, wait a minute..."certified...as a terrorist organization...in return for Washington's promise to drop all support for the MEK"? We certainly weren't/aren't supporting the MEK if they are certified as a terrorist organization.

Later, IIRC, the MEK was taken off the terrorists list, but not for the reason offered by Bamford. Certainly, Tehran never extradited any members of al Qaeda.

What was your first clue?

You didn't by chance look at a map, did you? What were the first two countries nailed by the US in the War against Islamic Fascism? And where in those countries did the US set up large, permanent bases? And why would the US need such large, permanent bases after the countries were pacified and democratic?

Look at the map. Where are those two countries located? What remaining country does this put a dozen large, powerful, US bases on either side of? Last question: What middle Eastern country is left, of the "Axis of Evil"?

Hint: The answer to the last two questions is the same.

With the demise of the Soviet Union, Iran became the undisputed leader in sponsorship and fomenting of terrorism by radical Islamic groups. The U.S.'s hope is to cow them into knocking it off, as worked with Libya. But if it doesn't work with Iran (it probably won't, they've been hating the US for too long), the U.S. has the means close at hand to attack and defeat them militarily. And having the means handy, was no accident.

This "game" is far from over.

Lets see:

Axis of Evil: Iraq, Iran, North Korea

Iraq: Already there
Iran: Next door, 150,000 troops already in place

Iran: The next logical step

Who said the war ends with Iraq? Anyone that thinks/thought so is terribly short-sighted and doesnt understand what the war on terrorism is about.
