DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran’s navy on Saturday launched a domestically made destroyer, which state media said has radar-evading stealth properties, as tensions rise with arch-enemy, the United States.

In a ceremony carried live on state television, the Sahand destroyer — which can sustain voyages lasting five months without resupply — joined Iran’s regular navy at a base in Bandar Abbas on the Gulf.
=======================================
The new ship is very powerful & can stay at sea for long periods without resupply. It has a flight deck for helicopters, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and electronic warfare capabilities, state television reported.

Missile and torpedo launchers, stealth tech? literally sounds and looks like they either copied or got blueprints for a russian or chinese destroyer. What they claim as a stealth warship is actually really easy to make unlike with aircraft, russia has made them for a while as has china nato and america, but the look of their ship screams they ripped off a russian design which would not do them any good unless they ripped off russian missiles and torpedos to go with it. Last I checked iran did good with building and upgrading copycats of russian missiles but in terms of naval missiles they have little experience and same with modern torpedos, my guess is they will roll with antique missiles and torpedos and a modernized version of an antique radar system.

Wrong.

Sahand can be deployed to faraway oceans and cruise in rough seas with logistical vessels for 150 days, Rear Admiral Sheikhi stated.

I don't care how stealthy they claim it to be.

It will be dead meat trying to leave the gulf.

Stealthy with ships does not mean stealth, much like aircraft it just means a smaller picture on radar, problem is even a stealthy ship is a massive target, meaning even with stealth they are easily detectable except at very long ranges. Many navies have done stealth ships just because they are easy to design unlike stealth aircraft. The upside it if radar can pick up you ship at 300 miles you can reduce that to let's say 200 miles, the downside is unless you have missiles and a radar/targeting system that can hit them before they see you, the stealth is useless for ships unless the enemy had no idea where you were, which is near impossible in the age of satellites, or you held the capability to strike the enemy outside the detection range, which few state actors do.

And where exactly is it going to go?

This thing going on an "extended cruise" is about as likely as China doing that.

For all that the PLAN calls itself a "navy", it is really not much more than a glorified Coast Guard.

I wonder if there is adequate food for that long? Odds are it will never get very far from home port.
