We have a central and direct location in order to land troops and military hardware in the event of a conflict in the ME.
Only people who don't understand geopolitics would say what you said. I certainly don't have time to educate people on it
All I will say is, read up on cold war geopolitics and educate yourself on the strategic interests both sides were fighting for and why, then you will understand why the US supports Israel.
Once you have read and educated yourself on that, you should read the about how geopolitics effected WW1 and WW2 as well as how it determined who emerged as the economic powerhouses after those conflicts. The problem here is that people don't know, or simply choose to ignore the context of past political decisions, as well as how those decisions still effect us today.
What purpose do you expect them to serve?
They are an ally that are continually attacked and threatened by other nations in the middle east. Now, our president is negotiating with one of those nations, releasing billions of dollars to them and allowing them to continue to work toward a nuclear bomb
In that none of it was ever really any of your business perhaps ? Particularly post Cold War
A random deckhand with a laser pointer?
Excuse me?
On what grounds do you claim if this topic is or is not any of my business?
Are you assuming that I am an American?
That would be deployed on a merchant ship,.
If I have I apologise. Its rare for posters from elsewhere to respond in this kind of topic
Elaborate the argument please?
With the condition that at least one merchant in the ship looks mysterious in a wizardry fashion.

Iran is no match whatsoever for the US Navy. They'll not be attacking it, no worries.
Sounds like one of those Washington manufactured stories fed to the ever compliant US media to condition the US populace for further planned military adventures in the region. We saw a whole slew of such fabricated stories attempting to legitimise the Iraq conflict in 2002/03.

Well, that's precisely my concern. And chiefly that Americans seem never to get wise to this after repeated examples of it. :doh
Vietnam and Watergate spring immediately to mind there. I'm baffled by why your countrymen are so taken in by the same old BS time and time again. Nobody can be that stupid so one has no other choice but to arrive at the conclusion that many of them actually like the idea of the US throwing its weight around and will accept any old excuse for it to do so. I'm guessing its an ego thing for many
Oh, no doubts mate. That can be seen amongst posters right here at DP. There's one additional possibility. It's here at DP that I can exclusively have political debates, those folks I know in real life (not that this is fake life, hope you get my point) aren't even slightly aware of what goes on if it doesn't DIRECTLY affect them, it's sad, but voters, by and large are definitively low information. And I don't necessarily mean that to be derogatory. People are quite busy making a go of life and don't prefer to spend any idle time they may have doing what you and I and others do here, or anywhere else regularly. And politicians know this. The other thing is that most Americans polled believe that the best news comes from FOX. And FOX has never met a war it didn't support.
No you don't and virtually the whole muslim world would rise against you if you dared
I'm very well informed on that subject thank you
I'd be happy to do a pop quiz with anyone on this forum on the history of the Cold War and 20th century history as far as that goes. I have a personal library of literature on this as it has always been a great interest of mine
Why does alliance with Israel serve any purpose for you whatsoever ? What are you getting out of this given alliances are supposed to be mutually beneficial ?The US has always been reactionary. The only way we would ever deploy troops to Israel would be if the ME rose up against Israel or, if we were defending a ME country against Russian aggression. Or, perhaps we would use it as a re-supply area for any conflict in either Asia or Europe. Even when nearly the entire ME tried invading Israel during the 6 day war, we did not send in large amount of forces, and Israel slapped down 5 ME countries in 6 days. They can handle themselves quite well. I think if the ME rose up against Israel, Israel could defeat all of them on its own. But I am sure we would send in military aid and possibly some advisors.
If you had any type of basic fundamental understanding of geopolitics, you would understand why we are there, and why we need to be there.
Tell that to the VietnameseJust as anyone with that knowledge would understand why we are in Asia and the positive impact we have had in Asia. The US will be remembered as the country that brought the world into a stretch of relative peace and prosperity due to its geopolitical strategy.
I would bet its a bunch of books that talk about how evil geopolitics is, as well as how democracy and capitalism will fail. That is the only way I could imagine someone having the view you have, is if you were a socialist, Marxist type.
