[h=1]Interview With BDS Co-Founder Omar Barghouti: Banned by Israel From Traveling, Threatened With Worse[/h]
Despite having lived in Israel for 22 years with no criminal record of any kind, Omar Barghouti (above) was this week denied the right to traveloutside the country. As one of the pioneers of the increasingly powerful movement to impose boycotts, sanctions and divestment measures (BDS) on Israel, Barghouti, an articulate, English-speaking activist, has frequently traveled around the world advocating his position. The Israeli government’s refusal to allow him to travel is obviously intended to suppress his speech and activism. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was one of the world leaders who traveled last year to Paris to participate in that city’s “free speech rally.”As the husband of a Palestinian citizen of Israel, Barghouti holds a visa of permanent residency in the country, but nonetheless needs official permission to travel outside of Israel, a travel document which – until last week – had been renewed every two years. Haaretz this weekreported that beyond the travel ban, Barghouti’s “residency rights in Israel are currently being reconsidered.”
The travel denial came after months of disturbing public threats directed at him by an Israeli government that has grown both more extreme and more fearful of BDS’s growing international popularity. In March, Israel’s Interior Minister Aryeh Deri threatened to revoke Barghouti’s residency rights, explicitly admitting that this was in retaliation for his speech and advocacy: “he is using his resident status to travel all over the world in order to operate against Israel in the most serious manner . . . . he took advantage of our enlightened state to portray us as the most horrible state in the world.”
Sarah Leah Whitson of Human Rights Watch told The Electronic Intifada that “Israel’s refusal to renew Barghouti’s travel document appears to be an effort to punish him for exercising his right to engage in peaceful, political activism, using its arsenal of bureaucratic control over Palestinian lives.” She added: “Israel has used this sort of control to arbitrarily ban many Palestinians from traveling, as well as to ban international human rights monitors, journalists and activists from entering Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.”

Regardless of one’s views on BDS and the Israeli occupation, anyone who purports to believe in basic conceptions of free speech rights should be appalled by Israeli behavior.

This kind of behavior by Israel should be appalling to any proponents of free speech. Its also incredibly ironic that the Israeli state is not allowing him to leave Israel and also threatening him, when Netanyahu took part in the "free speech" march in France in memory of Charlie Hebdo. Its shameful to claim to be in favor of free speech but in one case ban a man from traveling and threaten to remove his residency rights and even some state officials are making calls for the Israeli state to engage in targeted assassinations of BDS leaders all because they disagree with his peaceful movement and is punishing him for engaging in peaceful political activism.

"Peaceful" movement with strong ties to terrorism...

A simple deviation form the fact that Omar Barghouti has not been charged with any crime, has not broken any laws in his 22 years living in Israel, and that BDS is in fact a peaceful movement using peaceful protest activities, a boycott. But hey I get it, you have to justify Israel's actions of silencing free speech and peaceful political activism when they disagree with it.

Might wanna ask those Palestinians who are being held in "administrative detention" without charge.

Yeah, keeping out foreign nationals who are actively working to undermine your state is a horrible idea.

Wait, no it's not. it's what any right-thinking people would do.

If you are a citizen of a state you have a right to be there. Otherwise, barring a treaty between governments, it is not a right. As for leaving, I'm pretty sure he will be allowed a one way ticket out pretty soon.

This isn't hard...

Like I said earlier you have to justify Israel's actions of silencing free speech and peaceful political activism when they disagree with it.

We know this game DS. Either let this guy spread hate to undermine the state or we will chastise you in an effort to spread hate and undermine the state.

Don't suppose you ever read catch the jew?

From the publisher description: Catch the Jew! recounts the adventures of gonzo journalist Tuvia Tenenbom, who wanders around Israel and the Palestinian Authority for seven months in search of the untold truths in today's Holy Land. With holy chutzpah, Tenenbom boldly goes where no Jew has gone before, at times risking his life as he assumes the identities of Tobi the German and even Abu Ali in order to probe into the many stories in this strange land and poke holes in all of them. ... Does Palestinian wife number one hate the Jews more than she hates wife number two? Who finances cash-rich NGOs pursuing a Judenrein Israel? Who sets Palestinian olive groves on fire and why? What is the emotional gravity that pulls idealistic human rights activists from other countries to Israel and only to Israel? Who are the flaming feminists who sacrifice their lives for the rights of polygamists?

"[Palestinians have a right to] resistance by any means, including armed resistance. [Jews] aren’t indigenous just because you say you are….[Jews] are not a people…the UN’s principle of the right to self-determination applies only to colonized people who want to acquire their rights. "

“Going back to the two-state solution, besides having passed its expiry date, it was never a moral solution to start with.We are witnessing the rapid demise of Zionism, and nothing can be done to save it, for Zionism is intent on killing itself. I, for one, support euthanasia.“

“A Jewish state in Palestine in any shape or form cannot but contravene the basic rights of the indigenous Palestinian population and perpetuate a system of racial discrimination that ought to be opposed categorically….Definitely, most definitely we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No Palestinian, rational Palestinian, not a sell-out Palestinian, will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

And those are just his statements (and not his broader hate movement) culled from the Internet in like 2 minutes.

Since you disagree with his views you think he should be denied to travel abroad and the calls for possible assassination against him from the Israeli state are justified?

Is Israel breaking any of it's laws by taking this action?? Like it or not, if this is a legal action, then we don't have any say in it. You can whine and complain all you want, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a member of the nation of Israel and is thus bound by it's laws. If he didn't want to come under those laws, then he should have found someplace else to live or worked to change those laws.

Pointing out the suppression of free speech. As the article stated, regardless of ones view of BDS, I would hope that those who claim to stand up for free speech rights would conedmn this type of action by the state of Israel, be it "legal" or not.

Battle field capture is hard to bring to court. There has been a discussion about that that continues. The Europeans are finding out that Bush was not so off mark as the propaganda stories go.

Ummmm... Thats really not how administrative detention works in Israel.... Essentially anyone can be taken into prison up to 6 months without charges in Israel.

And that is worse than being killed or being framed for a 10 years sentence for being opposition?

Are you attempting to justify this practice because you perceive it as "not as bad as Russia"?

Of course you would hope that. It's always the hope of the anti-Israel crowd to push the narrowest narrative possible so that we pay no attention to the man behind the curtain and focus only on the issue du jour being pushed for propaganda purposes. It's never about the Palestinians rejecting the Jews' right to a state, it's about a house being built within a Jewish community. It wasn't about the steady flow of suicide bombers massacring Israelis, it was about the Israeli offensive to stop those bombers. it's not about thousands of rockets being launched at Israeli civilians, it's about Israel's "disproportionate" response in making them stop. And it's not about a genocidal scumbag actively working to destroy a state of 8 million people - the only state where the Jews can exercise the rights of self determination and collective self defence - it is about mean bad Israel taking his right to do that away from him.

Remember, this is a guy who said he supports terrorism against Israelis ("resistance by any means") and that the Jews have no right to their own state because they are not a people.

So do I care if he is put on a plane and thrown out of the country - not in the least. And if they want to lock him down while they figure out what to do with him, well, I'm ok with that too.

But fixate on the issue of whether this scumbag is being treated "fairly" as he works to destroy Israel as much as you like. It just shows the folks who support Israel's continued existence that those who say they are "pro justice" don't really understand what that term actually means.

Read it and then we can talk about it. The name is a bit irreverent (like the rest of the book) and it's a very entertaining read.
