India tests new, long-range Agni-V nuclear-capable missile | News | DW.DE | 15.09.2013

India has hailed its second test launch of a long-range missile as a success, saying it "met all the mission objectives with absolute accuracy." Once ready, the Agni-V would stretch India's theoretical nuclear reach.
"The missile hit its target in the Indian Ocean in 20 minutes - all desired mission objectives of this developmental test were met," Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesman Ravi Gupta said. The DRDO is a department for high-tech military developments.
The Agni-V has a range of about 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles), extending the current maximum range of 3,500 kilometers offered by the Agni-III. India's theoretical nuclear reach already covers all of neighboring Pakistan, but analysts say the country's ballistic program is now designed to counter nearby nuclear power China. If the Agni-V's stated range figures are accurate, it should be able to reach most or all of China from India.

I already said in other threads that I think it was a mistake to let Pakistan and India to have nuclear arsenals. They are not good countries and the fanaticism instilled in the majority of people there will act in favor of an eventual nuclear use in a really brutal war. India has problems with Pakistan over the Kashmir region and with China on several northern territories.

Its good for us short term. The Indians act as a counter balance to the Chinese in that region.

You are assuming that by india having long range capabilities, that will somehow discourage the Chinesse from doing... what exactly?

The chinesse will continue to:
-oppress their people
-Hold tibet in their grip and pursue an agenda of ethnic replacement by sending in millions of ethnic han chinesse to replace the native tibetans.
-forge lucrative contracts with middle eastern countries for their oil (see Iran and the Iraq oil fields)
-offer credit to african countries that isn't tied into them making reforms for more democratic implementations, as foreign aid from western nations is.
-make claims on Japanesse territories.

The only thing that could be a deterrent is if China is interested in laying claims to northern Indian territories. For anything else, India won't put itself in front of China's ambitions. The onl real result from them having long range capabilities is growing instability in the region thanks to the fact that both India and Pakistan are 2 nations that haven't got the same aversion to the nuclear bomb as we do.

I don't care what the Chinese do over there. The long range missile serves notice to the Chinese that the Indians are still major players in the region. You notice the Chinese navy doesn't play in the Indian Ocean very much. The Indian navy is a blue water navy unlike the Chinese.

The launch of the nuclear weapons capable Agni-V all over again incontestible India’s capability in firing AN Inter-Continental missile (ICBM). Asian nation staked the claim to hitch AN elite club of countries to possess the technology for developing ICBMs once the exceptional success of Agni-V’s maiden flight-test in Apr last year.
