There were one in five families in the United States in 2015, or 19.7 percent, in which no one in the family worked, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Families are classified either as married-couple families or as families maintained by women or men without spouses present,” explains the bureau. “Families include those without children as well as those with children under age 18.”

There were 81,410,000 families in the United States in 2015. Of those, there were 16,060,000 families in which no member was employed, or 19.7 percent of the total.

The number has remained relatively steady since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking this data since 1995.

Welfare, drug dealing and selling stolen goods at yard sales, works for some. They don't pay taxes and most likely don't vote or care.

I have seen quite a few people who do most of their work on the black market, they get paid under the table. At some point we are going to have to deal with this, because the government has to be paid for, we cant let taxes be avoided on the scale that we allow currently.

Sadly, the study doesn't show WHERE those families are. But, given that red states strongly tend to have higher percentages of their populations on welfare and food stamps, chances are pretty doggone good that the percentages of these families are probably found in red states, too.

I sure don't know how that can be, when the Blue States have so many pencil neck, freeloaders.

Subsidizing families for abortion, birth control, food, child care....that's all Blue State, liberal ****!

Since retired married couples are included in that statistic, it really doesn't tell us much.

Retirees don't work.

It will improve a lot, when drug sales are legalized.

There's only one solution.

Kill the elderly.

Probably mostly in red states because that's where retirees go. That's where I'm going next year.

so what...20%

they are not all drug dealing freeloaders, *shrug* being the loving christian christ-like people that we are, I am certain that we pause before judging

*cough*

And also when we build a wall and then after insist that migrants come LEGALLY (channeling my inner Donald Trump). Right now we tend to be of the opinion that insisting that the employment laws are followed will hurt mexicans who are here illegally, and we take this to the nutty extreme of considering this fact racism. No, it is turning the screws on the criminals, which is often the right thing to do.

Then why are percentages of population on welfare and food stamps generally higher in red states? As are rates of teenage pregnancy, divorce, poverty....

And yet....it is the blue states that always prop up the red states who are the ones who take more from the federal government than they pay in. Imagine that!

No mention of food stamps in the OP.

No...but read my first reply again. If there are higher percentages of populations on food stamps in red states, then that obviously means that it's more likely that red states may well have generally higher percentages of families that don't work.

Perhaps that's because retirees are disproportionately drawn to the red states.

I have to say my response to that is: so what? It has nothing to do with this thread, which I believe is misguided to begin with.

And, sadly, a higher percentage of retirees may indeed cause a higher percentage of the population to be on food stamps.
