http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/10/19/D8KRNVS80.html Maybe I'm missing something but what is wrong with advising immigrans legal or illegal that it is a federal crime for non-citizens to attempt to or actually vote? The letter, written in Spanish, tells recipients: "You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time." then " In fact, immigrants who are naturalized U.S. citizens can vote." Once you are a naturalized citizen aren't you no longer an immigrant?

Because it's deliberately obtuse for one thing. My grandparents were all immigrants who naturalized and became citizens. They were considered immigrants their whole lives as well as citizens. To say that immigrants can't vote is a misnomer and purposefully misleading.

So if the letter said "un-naturalized citizens" it would have been OK?

My ancestors came here as immigrants and because citizens and from that point on "were" immigrants.

Yeah.. or have it say instead of "immigrants can't vote" have it say "only legal citizens of the US can vote". Yeah, it's a bit nitpicky, I admit.

Based on the definition, you don't cease being an immigrant when you become a citizen. An immigrant is simply one who migrates to another country with intentions of making it permanent.

And an ILLEGAL immigrant is one who invades your country, sucks the money out of the budget, and gets signed up to vote right away by the Democratic & GOP Parties during Anti-U.S./Let's-hurt-the-U.S.-by-skipping-work-from-jobs-that-are-illegal-for-us-to-have-anyway rallies!

Why can't illegals vote? In the last 2 Presidential elections we have had illegal immigrants vote, felons vote, imaginary people vote, DEAD people vote, and numerous real and very much alive people vote more than once!

Meanwhile the (Socialist) Democtrats are against a National Voters' picture ID. Can anyone tell me why? We have to have LIBRARY cards to check out a book. We have to have a picture ID for a drivers liscense. we have to show a picture ID to get into a bar/to order alcohol in a club, and the Dems are OK with THAT! Yet request a picture ID for something INFINETELY IMPORTANT, and they raise holy HE!L! That is because they are against anything that would actually help get rid of the corruption! Even Hillary joined a commrade to submit legislation that would have stripped states of their right to decide who gets to vote, their main goal being making it legal for all the felons they have had voting for them for years to finally be legal (and to cover the next Pres who gets impeached and might actually get convicted of a felony! It would be bad to have an EX-President who can't vote in his own country anymore!:rofl C'Mon people, it was a JOKE! Relax!)

Exactly. If these letters said that it's illegal for immigrants to vote, they were misleading.

And Shaumort, it isn't "nitpicky." Whoever sent these letters out knew fully well what they were doing, since the story implies that at least some of the recipients were US citizens. Why would they get this letter at all? And why not just say "non-citizens." Surely anyone who has a passing knowledge of politics understands that US citizens can vote, regardless of their country of origin. This hardly seems like an honest mistake.

But I think things like this happen in every election, and are done by both parties. So I won't raise a big fuss about it, except to say that whoever did it should be prosecuted if he broke the law.
