No doubt the extreme anti gay stance of his religion made it impossible for him to come to grips with his own homosexuality.

The fundamentalist Christians don't put gays to death, but I'd think that gay evangelicals would have difficulty with their religious beliefs as well.

Only because they are living in a society that will not tolerate it. They've made their feelings quite clear, over the years, and they invoke this difference only to indulge in another of their rabid bigotries.
