The Trump Administration's Economic War on the World: Hitting Adversaries, Punishing Innocents, Angering Allies - Antiwar.com Original

'...Imagine. China is acting like … the US!

It’s almost charming to see such anger over Beijing’s behavior when America continues to be the global leader in using its economic power to penalize governments which refuse to heed its commands. In January the president said he would punish Iraq if it acted like a sovereign state and insisted on the withdrawal of American troops.

In June the Trump administration threatened to impose sanctions on everyone, including family members, associated with the International Criminal Court if it proceeded with plans to investigate US military personnel. Washington would treat a United Nations body created by multilateral treaty like Iran. And borrow enforcement tactics from North Korea, which punishes multiple generations for offenses against the regime.

Last month the Trump administration added new sanctions in an attempt to block construction of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline between Germany, a supposed ally, and Russia, essentially demanding that Berlin submit its energy policy to America for approval. (It is widely suspected in Europe that Washington’s ultimate objective is to force US natural gas exports into the German market.)

However, what continues to most set America apart from ever other country, including China, is the former’s insistence on conscripting the rest of the world to follow US policy. Originally American officials punished American companies and individuals trading with disfavored states. However, in the 1980s the US began expanding penalties for commerce with the Soviet Union and later Cuba to foreign, especially European, subsidiaries of American firms.

The next step, applied to Sudan in 1997, was financial sanctions, punishing any company or individual doing business with anyone in Sudan if they had the slightest connection to any US banking institution. Which prevented normal commerce, irrespective of where a firm was located. As a result, even Khartoum’s embassies had to operate on a cash basis. After the 9/11 attacks Washington extended this form of penalty. Today the US uses America’s dominant economic role to insist that every resident of earth follow Washington’s directives.

The Trump administration sanctions everyone everywhere for everything even if there is no likelihood that doing so will have any practical impact. That is most evident in the administration’s high-profile "maximum pressure" campaigns against Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela....."

Washington needs to relearn the concepts of humility, restraint, and proportionality before it sparks a global revolt that harms more innocent parties and further undermines America’s economic clout.

It was those concepts of "humility, restraint, and proportionality"...being used by every preceding administration right up to Obama...that has made necessary Trump's use of America's economic, military and political leverage for the benefit of all American citizens and businesses.

Yes...globalists, the politicians they finance and Trump haters don't like what Trump is doing. They prefer that American consumers just shut up and pay them their money and to hell with the American workers and companies. They want Americans to take what they are given by that cabal and that's it.

Sorry. As long as Trump is President he will continue to protect Americans by using every economic weapon in his arsenal...and his arsenal is powerful. If you are an American and you don't want America protected...if you want the US to be the world's piggy bank whether it helps us or not...if you want our jobs, industries and companies to go to other countries...then be honest...say you don't give a rat's ass about America...and vote against him.

And yeah...China, being on the receiving end as they should be...think they can do the same thing. Too bad, but they just DON'T have the clout the US has. The only ones they can use Trump's tactics against is other countries like those in the EU and Canada. Sucks to be them.

So, how's Trump's Amexit strategy working so far? His major measurement was the trade "deficit". It worsened under Trump, but improved under Obama over Bush2. So, how's Trump's Amexit strategy working so far?

What do you consider "Amexit"?

I had never heard the term, so I looked it up. Nearest I can tell, it involves the US reducing it's political influence in other parts of the world, such as the Middle East and Asia. I don't see this including any economic withdrawal.

Economic security/national security is Trump's concern. He's not all that interested in controlling countries politically. He just wants to make good deals...especially good trade deals.

So tell me what you think Amexit is all about and we'll talk about it.

You guys better be careful. Your 330 million versus 5 times that. Admittedly, half of those are peasants yet to make the leap into city life. And i think you guys will be the super power for at least the next 20 years. Which is good. Because Australia needs you guys.

Yes, those tariffs are making things much more beneficial.

yawn...

Venezuela - Guaido is chosen by his people. The US supports him over the socialist Marco who is destroying the country. (Trump isn't a banker.)

Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Cuba - Why on earth should we be supporting those countries? They are quagmires or they want to kill us. We will guard ourselves against them and otherwise ignore them. They can go to hell in their own way.

Because of ?OUR? Multinational Corporation's influence on and in U.S. forigen policy, including financial pressure, loan sharking, assasination and war, it's no wonder we US are reviled around the world. Since, as Eisenhower put it, the Military Industrial Complex took over OUR Government the people of the U.S. have been poorly represented while the MIC has USED OUR Government to further their aganda; which is - getting richer without regaurd for anything else but, including human life. :(

...hint: ..learn about 'your' system of money issuance/creation...until then, you are a trifling and hopeless republicrat babbler... word... ;)

Yes. You are talking about virtually every previous administration in the last 40 years, except Trump's...and every Congress, both Dem and Rep, in the last 40 years...including the current Congress.

These are the people who won't allow Trump to upset the good thing they have going. They are backed by those Multinational Corporations you mentioned, as well as political, financial and industrial leaders across the world who are being paid by those multinationals to keep it all going. They, collectively are called Globalists and they are fight Trump with everything they have because...there are TRILLIONS at stake.

If you don't like what those Globalists are doing, you should be supporting Trump. He is almost the only world leader who is working against those Globalists.

shrug...you tell me.

In any case, who cares? Those bankers don't like Trump, you know.

Except ... tRump is DEEP in their pockets ... DEEP - DEEP - DEEP!

Wrong.

Trump isn't deep in any globalist's pockets. That's why the globalists hate him so much. They have nothing to control him with.

...oh looky... a trumpkin [who apparently 'knows' all about trump through trump's television appearances :cuckoo: ] who apparently listens to the likes of republican-radio propagandist$ glen beck and alex jones...yammering about some 'globalism'...

"...we must acknowledge that the professed great nationalist is really a globalist. He has companies operating in more than a dozen countries and bank accounts in who knows how many nations. Two of his three wives were foreign-born, and at least two of his children spent most of their childhood summers outside our borders.

Consorting with Russians to help him win an election is not worrisome to this type of globalist. Mr. Trump sees all countries, including ours, as having a dark underbelly. He is a dybbuk, who rather than being ashamed, guilty or motivated to help our pockmarked nation evolve, looks at the world without hope or imagination. His romance with dictators and tyrants comes from a worldview that might is right. The stable genius is not sentimental for democratic ideals. He sees the United States as an alpha country but not the only one — we are just another bully on the planetary stage...."

AGAIN...HOW MANY ZILLION$ DOES TRUMP OWE TO GLOBALIST BANKERS?... and btw, your stinking republicans would be screaming bloody murder if a democrat was as dishonest/secretive about their 'financial activitie$'..

[...can someone explain to this trumpster that 'the borrower is servant to the lender' ] ...ugh... repughlicans... :cuckoo:

:2rofll: keep telling yourself that.

I think you underestimate the chinese. Economically they are doing far better than america. Where your president fails to to show interest in the pacifica , africa and asian countries, china is fast becoming a part of the economy. And america does not have a good trade relation with the rest of the world. As you say, tariffs everywhere.

While few are concerned with americas one and only threat, to withdraw money and support. Many countries are engaging in a very real threat of ciber war with the chinese. Americas interests are of concern only to americans. But everyone is looking to see what the chinese are doing.

His withdrawal, and threatening to do so, from any kind of intl agreement. Incl such as moving defense out of Germany. That's what Trump's been doing in grand fashion. Trump loves nothing more than tearing stuff up so He can destroy anything not Trump and remake something no better in His name.

The best measure of the success of Trump's vaunted trade deals, after having torn them up by declaring our allies national security threats, is "improving" the trade balance. The US trade balance has worsened in the 1st 3 yrs of Trump after having improved in the Obama yrs over Bush2. Trump's favorite, China, the trade imbalance was 22% higher the 1st 3 yrs of Trump avg trade deficit compared to the avg 8 yrs of Obama. "He just wants to make good deals...especially good trade deals." Hilarious. Yeah, you run with that one.
