I was trying to think of a list of ignorant phrasing that has become so common it has actually become meaning for something it is not. This kind of stuff bugs me and I just wanted to see if anyone had anything to add to the list or discussion.

Example:

Indian
What it is: An individual that lives in or is from India.
What it is used as: A Native American
Why is it wrong: The first settlers of the new world thought they landed in India, so naturally they called the people they found Indians. Since they were not in India, these people were not Indians but the name is still used today.

Sodom (Sodomy)
What it is: A city that was destroyed according to the bible.
What it is used as: To describe the act of homosexuality
Why is it wrong: There is no reference to homosexuality in the instance where the mob was talking to Lot. They asked to "know" who is visitors (the angels) were and for them to come outside. Lot refused and offered his daughters to the mob to distract the mob. Personally I have never found a single story in any time in history where "knowing" someone meant that person wanted to or had homosexual sex with another.

Niger
What it is: Presently a purely slang term
What it is used as: To describe the slaves that came from the African area of Niger.
Why is it wrong: Created by uneducated ignorant men who didn't know how to pronounce the countries proper name or have the grammar skills to know the people of this country should be called Nigerian.

irregardless

Gawd I hate it when people say that. My aunt had the audacity to correct my mother when my mother said "regardless." That idiot.

Irregardless is totally redundant and sounds stupid. However, it is now in the dictionary because so many people have used it.

heighth

I hate that too. It's f**king height. However, because people say length and width, where there is a "th," people add it to height. Now that damn word is in the dictionary as well. It sounds ignorant.

nice adds aps.

Probly
I hear a lot of people in southern Cali say probly. It is PROBABLY. Don't be lazy with your vocabulary!

I tell you what
Freaking tell me something then. What is what?

You know
Now this can be used in a right way and wrong way. Saying 'You know' as a place holder for silence (much like uhhhhh) before you actually finish your explanation is the wrong way. I just want to say "No I don't know because you haven't told me yet!"

Speaking of placeholders I don't understand why people insist on making some sort of sound while they are collecting their thoughts. If you need to take 3 seconds to think about what you are going to say next don't sit there saying uhhhh, or ummm.
