If Trump fails, who would best lead the GOP?

The Trump deplorables must be either flushed with the rest of the crap or ordered to shut up and sit in the back of the bus and just be happy they are not walking.

I hope you realize that many "Trump deplorables" are former Democrats. Would you like them back? They are how Trump won in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio. They are out of work blue collar workers that liked the idea of protectionism. They believe the unions failed them.

He's a corporte sellout too, but I like Schiff a bit, he's got some spine at least and he's gonna be serious about oversight, we need that right now and he's got the experience to get stuff done. Unfortunately we still need some of these dinosaurs and their experience to stand up against the **** show regime of Trump. That is the unfortunate part, but I like Schiff better than Pelosi or Schumer, god every time I think about Schumer I think the guy must have a tail, one that permanently resides between his legs, what a wuss! McConnel has made Schumer his bitch so many times it's a national embarassment! Someone PLEASE primary Schumer out of a job soon!

The worst part is McConnel isn't clever or hard to predict, he's not some master stateman, Schumer is just such a pathetic spineless milktoast, it's easy for Mitch to make him his bitch!

Serious about oversight??? Schiff?? LOL!!

Yeah...right...never mind.

Not at all the point. The point is Cruz will never win another election, ever, I'd lay money on it if I had mobney to spend on such frivolity, but alas I don't, I'd rather spend it on motorcycles ;)

Six years is an eternity in politics. Cruz is not scandal tarred and has plenty of time to strengthen himself politically.

After the toilet is flushed - I never want the contents back.

Deplorables are the hard core racists and sexists and xenophobes who need to crawl back under their rocks.

Yes, there are blue collar voters who may have voted Democratic in the past who became disenchanted with their future and voted for Trump. Those folks can be educated and can be won back and I would welcome them back. But that is a different group than the deplorables.

If Trump fails, they'll choose Trump because they are in love with him, and you and Dad can't keep them apart ever or they'll run away.

Maybe you can send them all to re-education camps! People develop prejudices for a reason. Fix the underlying reason and you'll fix much of the prejudice. Of course you could just virtue signal to make yourself feel good and superior, but that doesn't accomplish anything.

Trump's health could fail, he could have an ethical failure or drop to an approval rating below 30%. In the midterms, the GOP took a beating in the suburbs. With a strong President, the discussion would have been if the GOP could achieve a filibuster proof 60 seats in the Senate in the 2018 midterms. Trump is the only game in town right now and a minor drag on the party. Who could best turn the GOP back into an electoral powerhouse?

Personally, I would like to see Senator Ben Sasse rise in prominence.

I really don't think Republicans are going to settle for someone more rational or left of Trump at this point. Conservative ideologies led to trump, which is why they wholly embraced him; Trump didn't create the party that exists today.

If Trump were to die today, we'd have nearly the exact same GOP next year that we have today.

I hope that US society hasn't deteriorated into a battle of free stuff versus prejudice. If it has, representative government has outlived it's usefulness.

Thanks for regurgitating Limbaugh. unfortunately, i passed his class and have since rejected his "theories."

I might grant you if you said Mark Levin. Limbaugh has been a full-fledged Trump humper for almost three years.

i figured. he jumped on the Bush wagon pretty early, too. "no, he's a real conservative, trust me! i talked to him!" lol. as for Levin, i was on a board with him under a different handle many years ago. he didn't impress me when i was a right winger, and he impresses me a lot less these days.

I will leave that noble task to younger bodies with greater faith than I have at this point in my life where I view the deplorable as having made an irrevocable choice and now our nations suffers for it.

Ah. That's why it's always important to level-set in any discussion.
Just what would be the qualities of a radical leftist?

Dictatorship of the proletariat, classless society, abolish capitalism, etc.

Do they have to say they want things like that or can they just work toward it?
Do you have to admit to being a balls-out Marxist in order to be a radical leftist?
There's no whiff of radical leftism in wanting free healthcare, free college for everyone, and being a self-described flavor of Socialist?
There's a growing number of those around.

Trump is not going to fail. In 2024, the potential nominees are probably not on the radar yet. Wouldn't be surprised to see Mike Pompeo, Tom Cotton in the mix.

Well, the burning, unanswered two-year old question continues to be, "What does 'fail' mean?"

It's a question that has been asked countless times here and has yet to be answered. And I don't mean a question that gets as one-dimensional an answer as "His support drops below X%" but rather one that answers, "What would Trump have to do to get below X%?"

I would argue no, since those are mainstream ideas in most of the world.

I assume Trump would want Putin to step in.

I'm not sure that is possible. His doctor attests that he is the healthiest person who ever lived, all of his ethical failures are simply witch hunts by the left, and he is the most popular president ever to breathe, even the blacks love him he claims.

Ben Sasse appears to be one of the GOP grown ups, but his social record would be a hindrance in a national race. I'm not sure Nikki Haley got out early enough to not be seen a Trump lackey. Maybe.

I think you may have what makes a deplorable. It is not someone that said **** it we gotta try something different our lives are going down the tubes...and pulled that lever for Trump
A deplorable is someone that no matter what he says still chants Trump, Trump, Trump. They are the ones that make an excuse for every lie. They are the ones that believe in every conspiracy theory. They are the ones that say his tweets are great and even though there lives have not gotten 1 iota better there still supporting him.

They may be mainstream ideas in some places but calling 'em free is a mainstream joke.
But again ... that's why it's always important to level-set in any discussion.
But now that that's out of the way ...
We don't follow most of the world because most of the world doesn't follow our Constitution.
Which would you rather have?

It's not an either/or situation. You are arguing Medicare is unconstitutional? The Supreme Court disagreed with you.

The Supreme Court never ruled on medicare for all because it isn't a law.

Fair question. I honestly believe that the GOP as it was once known is no longer. The remnants of the former GOP have been peed on and ripped to shreds by corporatists, raw capitalists, religionists and the Tea Party. Trump and his cultists have all but finished the job.

The GOP left me a while back and it became obvious that the party made a deal with the devil. The Religious Right sealed the deal and the GOP has been on a sliding board to hell ever since. There's really nothing to lead. It ain't coming back.
