Everyone knows that one of the big problems coming out of the pandemic has been the supply chain issues and rising oil prices. It seemed like those were problems that could’ve been addressed by the end of the year- IF there was not this small problem of Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine.

So now, many Republicans are pressuring Joe Biden to be tougher on Russia and cut off all oil and gas imports. They’re calling him incompetent and demented for not doing so. But the Biden administration has been hesitant to do so because it’s going to mean even higher oil prices. And this risks inflaming an already angry and resentful GOP base. They’re going to call him incompetent and demented for raising oil prices.

So what are some thoughts about how Biden can navigate this catch 22?

Drill, baby drill.

But that would agitate the presidents' political constituency.
Better to blame his problems on Republicans,

If the GOP can make trump look good, and HRC look bad enough to lose the 2016 election----anything is possible when it comes to swaying the small minds of the 74 million out there....

From what I understand, The Biden administration has already given out more permits to oil companies for drilling in the Trump administration.

But it’s the oil companies which have refused to do so, because they believe they can make more money if they hold off for now.

Hey, everyone knows things work out for the best if you just leave the free market completely free, right?

bash

that's all they do

Everyone doesn't know that. Much of the rising oil prices are traceable to the Democrat's hostility to fossil fuels. Likewise, many of the supply line holdups are regulatory in nature. COVID had a major impact, but we have transitioned the worst of it before Biden took office

Republicans will make hay while the sun is shining. In Biden's case, that means all the time since the administration is so hesitant and ineffectual.

The Biden administration has handed out more oil drilling permits than the Trump administration. Oil companies are not drilling because the calculation is Patient makes more money that way.

Oil production in the US is climbing. Wanna try another throw away talking point?

The oil companies don't want to expand drilling. They are focused on investor return. Biden could use tge DPA to force them to but the GOP would never support that. No, the GOP like it best this way......throw stones.

Obtaining a drilling permit from the Dept of Interior s more complicated and time consuming than obtaining a driving permit from the DMV.

The permits being issued were originally sought during the Trump admin.
Meanwhile, the Biden Admin has frozen approval of new approvals and have gone to court to stop the approval of already approved permits.

Moreover, the idea that progressives are enamored with increased oil production, and want more of it, is too absurd to contemplate.

More lies. I really hope Donald is paying you well for the continuous fluffing and lying for him.

False. Just because they believe in climate change doesn’t mean that you don’t take actions in the face of short term challenges. A student can believe in regular sleep and yet still pull an all-nighter before an exam. This is war time and some short term measures can be taken to meet the challenge. The Biden administration knows this.

And approved under the current administration. Just like millions of people sought jobs under the prior administration but actually got them under the current one.

Permits are not the problem. The companies have stated clearly and openly that increased drilling is NOT in their business plan.

:When asked about production targets for 2022 during a January earnings call, ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods responded, "The primary objectives we've had in looking at the portfolio is less about volume and volume targets and more about the quality and profitability of the barrels that we're producing."

THe companies have the permits, but are not drilling because we had a surplus of oil caused by the covid crisis. The drilling companies literally had to give the oil away and they were not going to drill for more when they lost money with each barrel they sold. With OPEC withholding oil to drive up the cost, we will have to wait until drilling begins again in this country and it will as the price they get for their oil climbs.

I'm sure the Republicans will use any tool they can to bash Biden.

Biden, for his part, has no morality, no sense of right or wrong and no courage whatever so thinking that he will act on behalf of "what's right" is a pipe dream.

If the people directing Biden don't tell him to do it, Biden will not do it. Expecting Biden to make a decision that does not leave him on all sides of any issue without a path to backtrack is not rational.

It's too bad for Ukraine that Trump is not in the White House.

There were LITERALLY MONTHS when Biden SHOULD HAVE defined the horror that would follow Russian adventurism.

He did not. he's an idiot with no backbone and no balls and cannot make any threat believable.

Putin is showing the world what occurs when a weak and feckless leader replaces a strong and determined leader.

Trump brought a whole raft of crazy to the table, but it worked for years to keep Putin inside of Russia.

Putin got what he wanted from Trump without having to resort to these measures. Recognition on the world stage, a disconnect within NATO and the US in political turmoil. Trump was complicit, he improbably just didn't know it. He was too busy thinking Putin's friendship made him look like anything other than a bully sucking up to another bully.

They're going to keep right on doing what they have for a couple decades now: blame everything bad on the Ds and credit everything good to the Rs, no matter how insanely stupid or absurd doing so is.

I'm

Don’t kid yourself. Putin was playing Trump like a fiddle. He would not have paid so much money to campaign for him in 2016 if he didn’t think he was fiddle material.

Neither. If he does right then they attribute the decision to his “handlers.” They’ve created a perfect bubble that insulates them from ever having to praise him.

When the truth is found to be lies.
Grace Slick

In this case, the truth is said to be lies, but close enough.

If the USA was going to send troops they should have been there before Putin got there now only a massive
group of covert actions to disrupt the Russian flow will do the job.

All allies should participate.

Anything Biden does is now too little too late. I will say he can recover from a bad start on Ukraine if he takes decisive action the rest of the way. I don't he he has it in him. The way he has handled most controversial issues so far in his presidency have been weak, late, uninspired. Afghanistan, southern border, energy sector, inflation, and now Ukraine. His advisers are too weak, too anti-military and not particularly good negotiators. We seem to settle for less and give too much.
