Iceland PM resigns amid Panama Papers scandal, official says | Fox News

The prime minister of Iceland resigned Tuesday amid reports that he and his wife set up an offshore company with the help of a Panamanian law firm at the center of a massive tax evasion leak, representing the first world leader to step down in the Panama Papers scandal, a government official told local media.

Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson had denied doing anything illegal and said he paid all taxes. Opponents argue his company, set up in the British Virgin Islands, represents a severe conflict of interest because it held investments in failed Icelandic banks that his government was responsible for overseeing.

Agriculture Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson told Icelandic broadcaster RUV that Gunnlaugsson would step down as leader of the country's coalition government. Iceland's president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson has not yet confirmed he has accepted the resignation.

This was pretty much expected after the roughly entire population of Iceland started to protest. I imagine that it will be the first of many to resign. Still waiting on the newspapers to delve into the data and find any American links.

I had to chuckle when it was said 100,000 people were in the streets protesting. I thought to myself that has to be a big chunck of the entire population!

It is just under a third of the population. It would be the equivalent of 100 million people protesting the president.

There is quite a charade going on in many EU countries. In Germany every politician and their dogs are howling for blood. Of course, they don't mention the fact that everyone has known of these transactions since ever and the finance ministry as well as the central bank and bank supervisory board have been monitoring banks continuously and been able to see these transactions from the beginning.

Iceland should be commended because they, unlike the United States, actually prosecuted high ranking members of the financial industry following the near economic collapse that they caused and from which they profited quite handsomely.

This from somebody about to nominate the very epitome of such actions?

I had no idea that Hillary Clinton was a high ranking member of a financial institution during the early to mid 2000s.

This has nothing to do with hating rich people, it is all about lying and cheating.
You are right, corruption should not be tolerated at any level, it can destroy an economy.

Every since the economic collapse starting in 2007 which hurt them pretty badly, unlike us, they started jailing their financial officers that broke the law. They don't put up with corruption there. I wish we didn't here.

I am sure Putin will be next. JK!

What's interesting about him is, his election is coming up. He's going to have to kill a lot of people this time to hold his seat rather than just the few that he has so far.

It's like you wake up every morning with stomach cramps and the instant your eyes open you are trying to figure out how to blame it on the clintons or anyone on the left.

He might become prime minister again and swap the presidency with the current Russian prime minister

I honestly think he will meet his maker the way he's made many others. He works through dark alleys and I think he's gonna cross someone more evil than he is in those Russian mafia corridors in his attempts to cling to power.

This is where and how the 1% hide there money and screw the government out of tax money owed............Isn't a few billion not enough to cheat on one's taxes?

The interesting item in this mess is................names of Americans in this type of scam are not being released at this time............... because it is said it may have an effect on the US elections in November.........

Let's guess whose name may be on the list.....................IMHO........No matter who........they should go to jail............and then given a fair trial

Yes. It almost had the feel of scapegoat justice, didn't it.
