Both found that Trump welcomed the Russian help and expected to benefit from it. It is not acceptable behavior and NEVER will be. No, not guilty means 'not guilty", it means not proven, it does not mean it didn't happen. While you have the right to be considered 'not guilty' until its proven that you are, you are either guilty of a crime or you are not guilty of a crime at the time the crime actually happens. It just takes the legal system time to sort through what happened and render a legal verdict. A jury verdict of guilty or innocent does not change the reality of the event or the legality of it.

In Trump's case, charges were never brought, so no legal determination of guilt or innocence was never established. By DoJ tradition, the matter was simply deferred, hence Trump nor America ever got its day in court. The matter remains open legally and thus open to debate.

Moreover, "cheating" in an election is not necessarily a crime. It can be highly unethical, and thus morally repugnant, but still not a crime. The Mueller case and the Senate report each produced a compelling case for Trump's unethical behaviors, his cheating, in the last election.

You can't prove that Russia changed even one vote. Not one.

It's not a stretch to think that Russia's campaign to discourage voting for Hillary in the three mid-western states worked. All they had to do was convince 100,000 Hillary voters to stay home. The reason she lost was turnout was much, much lower than expected. The Russians in all likelihood did indeed flip the election, but we will never know for sure. We do know they tried and when the margin is that lean, it doesn't take much to make difference.

This is the reason they need to be cleansed from our electoral system, because having doubts means questioning the election results. That is not good for democracy. Their playing in our election, for all intents and purposes, could have been construed as a act of war. Trump giving them a pass on this means they will likely do it again. Trump could have been impeached for simply not adequately defending America. It is a much, much bigger issue than we have acknowledged. The centerpiece of democracy are free and fair elections. The election process must be protected.

The EC was most popular with the South as another way to weaken the power of northern states where the talk of abolitionists was gaining strength. But even Hamilton, a vocal opponent of slavery, argued for it with uncharacteristic apparent naïveté (he wasn't particularly fond of what we call populism, truth be told) :



In the beginning, electors were not political and were to be selected by the state legislatures based on their incorruptible and righteous reputations each completely free to vote his conscience. Even before Hamilton's death in 1804 state's were selecting electors by popular vote and the idea of forcing all electors to vote the way the popular vote went in the state. And eventually that became the rule all across the country with the exception of ME and NE which allows electors to be selected by congressional district. IOW, the EC became corrupted by political machinations in its infancy and has been so ever since.

Yes a good part of the reason for the EC was that southern States got credit for their slave population when figuring electors. Slaves we counted as 3/5ths of a person. Don't ask me how they got that number but it does show how antiquated the EC is.
