I can't drive a manual.

Yes he went through the first 4 low speeds, flipped the switch, and was in the second high speed, within 10 seconds. Is that what "short-shifting" is?

I've never seen this truck go over 60mph. 1st & 2nd gear on this truck barely get you over 5mph, but are very good in sand with the dif-locks in.

Short shifting is shifting before the engine is in its power band.

he probably had the diff in low,in which all gears would be like granny low, revving high and barely moving, until high is engaged in either the diff or trans.this is done to reduce stress on the engine and clutch, especially in older trucks.under high gear setting the rpm band is broader but the clutch has to be slipped heavily to get rolling, under high/low switchable diffs even the heaviest loads can be started in low setting through all gears with minimal clutch slip for takeoff, then transitioning into high position, basically adding a new range of gears through the same trans.

for example when someone says an 18 speed trans, its actually a 9 speed with high/low similiar to a tcase on 4wd.in low range, starting gear may be around 15-19 to one since its a granny gear,it will redline after just barely rolling, but under extreme loads its needed to get moving, all other gears still have high revs, forcing shifts in short time, until high range is engaged, granting a wider powerband.

under no load however, low range is usually ignored alltogether,as granny low or even second is usually enough to easily get a vehicle running in no load under high.
