I’m of Eskimos who live in Alaska. (1 Viewer)

I’m of Eskimos who live in Alaska. And I should say that all representatives of our native population are very glad to see great development of Alaska’s cooperation, initiated by Russia in 1988, when regular flights between our neighboring regions began and most Eskimos of Alaska were able to meet great quantity of their relatives and friends in Chukotka, whom they had no case to see during last 40 years. I think nobody can deny at this time that not only common problems, connected with difficulties of our live in severe climate or ecology, but also common heritage and family ties unite our peoples. Certainly the fact that inhabitants of Russian Far East and aboriginal population of Alaska are far from political centers of their countries helps towards development of our spiritual kinship. Maybe, we’ve understood it better that leaders of our countries. Now joint trade missions, university interchanges, conferences and even sport events are very common in our regions. It creates wholesome surroundings for activities of Russian companies and investors, who actively cooperate with our businessmen and local authorities in the sphere of development of Alaska’s railway sector and reshaping of our social infrastructure. There is no secret for anybody who live in Alaska, that Russian business leaders and some Governors of Far Eastern region (such as Chukot’s Governor, Abramowitz) invest more money in such spheres of our economy as energy sector, transport, trade or even education than US authorities. Thus, year by year we drift apart USA and close Russia. I don’t doubt that US administration knows the score. And if Washington keeps silence, it means we should expedite the process of our reunion with Russia. Moreover, in this case it will be more possible for Alaska to find its feed at last, because it is customary to Russians to grant autonomy in such case. I think it’s time to call national referendum of Alaska’s native peoples on perspective of our possible joining Russia now.

Secession was attempted in 1861.
It was not allowed.

This is the most laughable and absurd notion I think I have ever read on this forum. If you think for one minute that we are going to hand Alaska back to Russia based on the angst of some natives, then you have got to be hitting the firewater too much. Be happy that the state pays for your medical, your housing, and your social development and leave it at that. It is a blessing to your "people" that you are on this side of the Bering Strait and not the other. What was it Russia tried to do to you guys? Oh yeah, exterminate you when they had control of Alaska. The "buttwieser in dja can" has addled your feeble senses.

Eskimo? Shouldn't that be Inuit..

You are right. Inuit, Aleut, Inupiak, Upik, Athabascan...but no...no Eskimos.

cool idea but doesn't Russia already have enough land? Plus teaching the whole Alaskan population Russian would be a nightmare considering how hard Russian is.

I have no dog in this fight but the idea of seceding from the Union seems to be more in vogue year by year. I don't know if anyone saw the Histoy Channel's special last year on the growing popularity of the secessionist idea in the South today. pretty interesting. There seem to be a hell of a lot of unhappy campers out there in the American woods.

A little known but interesting fact about seceeding from the union...

There is one state that can legally leave the United States. Texas. Texas is not, strictly speaking, a state, but the "Republic of Texas", not in tradition but in law. When Texas joined the union it did so with the caveat that it could leave any time it wanted with a majority vote of it's citizens, and that stipulation was accepted by the federal government, and it has never been changed.

It's kind of hard to accept this claim.

It is about on par with someone saying that they are of Redskins who live in Arizona.

Eskimo is generally considered to be an insulting and racist term by the native tribes such as the Inuit.

We should have let the South secede the first time. I honestly would not mind if they did it now.

Don't let the door hit ya on the *** on your way out!

Actually, you are partially right. There are "Eskimo" tribes but they are found in the far northern Yukon of Canada. As for the rest, yes, the Athabascans, Inuits, Yupiks, etc don't like being called Eskimos. It's sort of like calling a Brazilian a Mexican...just don't do it. It's rude.

I don't doubt what you say but could you give me a link to that information. The law or something. Couldn't find it with search engine. Thanks
