If this shutdown is prolonged much longer, we're going to see the safety of people traveling by air to be very compromised as more TSA agents call out 'sick'. The threat of terrorism increases.

First on CNN: Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports

Washington (CNN)Hundreds of Transportation Security Administration officers, who are required to work without paychecks through the partial government shutdown, have called out from work this week from at least four major airports, according to two senior agency officials and three TSA employee union officials.

The mass call outs could inevitably mean air travel is less secure, especially as the shutdown enters its second week with no clear end to the political stalemate in sight.
"This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect," Hydrick Thomas, president of the national TSA employee union, told CNN.

At New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, as many as 170 TSA employees have called out each day this week, Thomas tells CNN. Officers from a morning shift were required to work extra hours to cover the gaps.

I'm sure if some 9/11 terrorist wannabes sneak past security, Trump will try to pin that on the Democrats. And his drooling fan base will believe him.

TSA employees aren't getting paid, but top level Trump administration officials are scheduled to receive a $10,000 raise beginning tomorrow.

This is the kind of thing that is going to get worse fast....we can not abuse government workers as we are doing an expect to have government workers.

Here's a solution...hire a private contractor to do the job.

We don't have the funds to even pay the people we already hired to do the job.

The airports and airlines are incapable of getting this done? They used to do it back before it was decided that the FedGov was in charge of everything.

See, crap like this is what happens when we put all our eggs in the government basket. If the government decides they no longer want to do something or decides that they can't do something the result is that people like you go "We're screwed!!" I've been having the same conversations with the anti-Brexit crew. It's like nothing ever happened before DHS took over port security and it's like England never managed to accomplish anything before the EU came along.

Sounds so easy, but there's a total of 55,000 of them. If all of them call out, is there any private company in the world that could potentially replace 55,000 trained TSA?

TSA officials said that they could have tough decisions to make, including whether to let passengers board flights with less scrutiny. Airports struggling with manpower issues could also opt to loosen standards for checked baggage based on a theory that people would not bring a bomb onto their own flights because the explosion would kill them, too. Known as positive passenger bag match, it presumes that if a passenger checks in and boards the flight, their checked luggage is safe, but some security experts are doubtful it is effective.

The TSA was established after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the WTC.

TSA agents are bafoonish jokes... have you been to other airports around the world? They are efficient, polite and effective. TSA are a bunch of rude children yelling and bullying passengers while creating lines and being ineffective.

Things would suck for a couple of weeks but hell yes it could get done. Heck, we didn't even have airport security back in the day. You dropped your luggage, if needed, at check in but otherwise just checked in at the gate. At some point in the 70's they added a metal detector you had to walk through. There were VERY few incidents back in those days but after 9/11 Bush decided we needed to lock down airports like they were nuclear security sites and since then it seems everyone has forgotten how we used to do things and how effective, overall, it really was.

I've been saying this for a long time, but as far as I'm concerned, every single day that the government is shut down, not only should Congress and the President not get paid, they should each be fined $10,000 each per day for not doing the jobs they were elected to do. We'd never see another shutdown again.

I wonder if Trump will do what Reagan did to Air Traffic Controllers when they tried to strike - show them the door.

Trump is the person who said he would take responsibility for the shutdown. This story is about the shutdown. Brush up on your troll posts. This one was a fail.

Wrong. This thread is about airport security... not Trump...

And...then you have every airport in America in shutdown, have the economy of the airlines destroyed...and then, good luck hiring scabs to work for that crap of a wage.

TRUMP!!!

Next time open the link and know what the thread is about. It's about TSA agents calling in sick because they aren't being paid. Want to know why they aren't being paid and are calling in sick? Because of the shutdown Trump wanted and is proud to own.

Fail less, Bodhi. If you can.

Yeah, we heard that when Reagan fired the air controllers, too. Understand this isn't firing every TSA screener, just those that refuse to report to work.
