A 10-year, billion pound neuroscience project which aims to revolutionise our understanding of the human brain has begun.
Scientists from 135 institutions, mostly in Europe, are participating in the Human Brain project.

--snip--

The HBP can be viewed as the neuroscience equivalent of the Human Genome Project, which involved thousands of scientists around the world working together to sequence our entire genetic code. That took more than a decade and cost hundreds of billions of dollars.
But whereas that involved mapping every one of the three billion base pairs found in every cell that make up our entire genetic code, the Human Brain Project will not be able to map the entire human brain. It's simply too complex. Link.

Stunning, something so complex, delicate and powerful - funny how it can be turned to mush so quickly by alcohol, thoughts of sex and religion.

More seriously, a billion pounds is short-change for something as complex as this.

And we are to believe that the brain just evolved......

It is one of the most extraordinary and exciting projects underway in the world today. The rapid growth of brain emulation programs (in one form or another) is another sign that neuroscience is on the ascendancy especially when set against the background of mental health, artificial intelligence, neural prosthetics, etc etc.

Exactly. Otherwise if we believe religion then according to OP the brain would be a mush.

I believe that to be the case too.

 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools...

Yes, it is. Imagine what advances could come from this project: Understanding autism, bipolar disorder, all manner of illnesses and perhaps being able to actually cure them.

What if, after the project is well underway, the conclusion is reached that the human brain could not possibly be the seat of consciousness all by itself, and that something else, something perhaps immaterial, is actually controlling it?

but, that's just wild speculation, of course.

They should not take it so hard on themselves though. There is still hope. "Just let reason touch upon thee and abandon fantasy land."

What makes it exciting also is the demand to develop computing systems and other technology that would allow us to map the human brain. That technology alone will bring huge benefits to us all.

On the way to exascale!
