WASHINGTON — Rep. Steny Hoyer emerged victorious Thursday after a bruising battle to win the No. 2 House leadership post in the 110th Congress.

Hoyer handily defeated Rep. John Murtha, who had the backing of House Speaker-nominee Nancy Pelosi to be her chief deputy when Democrats take back the House in January.

Maybe the blue-dog Dems elected this time around will stand up to the lunatic-fringe leftists in the leadership.

Nah. Probably not.

I think the Democrats will regret the day they elected a bunch of of Moderates and Conservatives...............This reminds me of the "Blue Dog Democrats" that backed Reagan in the eighties on tax cuts and many other Conservative issues...

Republicans lost the election, not Conservatives...........

I am glad Murtha lost. I really didn't like the appearance of impropriety from way back when. I had seen Hoyer speak on a political show and found him to be very articulate. Murtha cannot answer a question with a short answer. He talks too much, and he loses his audience. He was on Hardball last night telling Chris Matthews he had the votes to win. While I like Murtha and what he stands for, I was relieved he lost today.

Pelosi was a fool to have said anything. She better learn from this.

I'm glad Hoyer won.
I'm not sure I care for Pelosi. Not sure why, yet, but I'm not sure. It might be the lack of loyalty. Hoyer was owed a more honorable treatment.
I have changed my mind about Murtha. Corruption has the ability to leave an unpleasant taste.
Maybe the more moderate dem/libs will win in their effort to unify.

Hmmm, I don't remember many of the new Dems campaigning on slashing spending, as a true conservative would, according to you.

Course I don't remember any Republicans campaigning on it either.

I agree. It was stupid to stand behind Murtha right after she yapped about cleaning the swamp, whether or not Murtha was charged.

This is a good thing. Murtha seems to have too many skeletons in his closet

Not quite correct.
The GOP gave the election away due to it's arrogant treatment of the American Electorate as well as widespread Monetry and Sexual corruption.
If you are elected to run America, you are expected (probably a forlorn hope) to be without corruption and certainly have no practising sexual deviants amongst your ranks.

Perhaps this is a good time to clean up the corruption within both party's.
I look forward to both Reid and Jefferson receiving visits from whoever arrests them for the crimes they may have committed.

I am happy that Murtha was not elected, as I am also happy at the wide margin which quite firmly locks him out of being elected at some time in the near future 149 to Hoyer 86 to Murtha.

Murtha was and probably still is a friend of Pelosi, but friendship counts for little in any party, what counts is the number of votes any candidate can rely on, the majority that Hoyer received is large enough to compel Pelosi to listen to him.

This is a stunning defeat for Pelosi. The new, first woman, Speaker of the House, could not get her hand picked Majority Leader after she had been twisting arms and issuing a public letter endorsing him.

She's in for trouble pulling the Dems together. But let's not lose site that Hoyer is way to the left too, they just hate each other.

And it wasn't blue dog conservative Dems that he won over

Hoyer targets liberals after Pelosi’s blow
By Josephine Hearn
A day after Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) endorsed his rival, Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) moved to shore up support among liberal lawmakers who usually take their cues from Pelosi.
Six Hoyer supporters wrote to the 58-member Congressional Progressive Caucus Monday, urging them to support Hoyer over Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) for the post of majority leader and arguing that Pelosi and Hoyer would be an effective team in spite of her endorsement.
“Steny has worked very well with Nancy and our entire leadership team, and their efforts have helped our Caucus achieve greater unity than at any time in the last half century,” wrote Progressive Caucus Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), José Serrano (D-N.Y.), Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) and Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.)....

And democrats were going to be the party of ethics..........what a joke.......:rofl

The Majority leader decision is a double-edged sword for the Democrats.

1) Murtha is on the CREW list of ethically challenged Congressional members. If he had won, this would send a signal that the Dems were not intent on keeping their word to clean up Congress, thus making them as hypocritical as the Republicans.

2) However, Murtha was one of the moderate Democrats, and having him as majority leader could have helped bipartisanship on many issues.

3) The choice of Hoyer, while being the ethical choice, has its downside in that he was the choice put forward by the Progressive caucus, thus jerking the House to the left, which is where Pelosi didnt want it to go.

I believe the Dems will be walking a tightrope now, but they did make the right choice. However, it was a case of damned if they did, and damned if they didnt. They have now stumbled into their first pitfall, and it was not even one the Republicans were planning on. This mess was a Democratic gift to the GOP. They are still not that great, tactically speaking.

Excuse me? Hoyer is a moderate Democrat.

Anyway, he was on Hardball last night, and I love him. He was articulate, he expressed wanting to work with the Republicans, and he showed all around class. It was impressive. He is far more sophisticated than Murtha could ever be, and that's the kind of person the Democrats need as Majority Leader. Somehow I doubt he'll make the nasty, ridiculous commentary that Boehner made (accusing the Democrats of siding with the terrorists). He seems too classy for that kind of juvenile behavior.

Hmmmm, what's more unethical? Pelosi supporting Murtha running for Majority Leader or Dennis Hastert looking the other way while Foley behaved inappropriately with pages?

Gee, this is a very close call.

Pelosi could have been handled in the back rooms a la LBJ. I'm glad it wasn't. The Dems voted, Moyer won.

What's Next?

Great one APS!

You definitely win the award for "telling it like it is" and cutting it down to the basics.
Another post that I wish I would have come up with!

Thanks, disney! Although when it comes down to it, I don't find Pelosi's behavior unethical. I think she was a fool in getting in the middle of this, but such intervention certainly was not unethical.

Or Democrats relecting and supporting Studds versus Hastert over innoucous Emails and getting rid of Foley when the truth came out. You guys lost that debate then, go there now and you'll lose it again.

I think Pelosi saying they are going to bring ethics back to politics and then the first thing she does is support a crook like Murtha.........

If you have some proof that Hastert did that I would be interested in seeing it.........

Oh and I see Jefferson the guy that stole 93,000 and hid it in his freezer is still a dem congressman....................At least Foley resigned.....

First, my opinion has not changed on Murtha to a large extent. I still support what he stands for. Second, I didn't like his explanation on the whole bribery thing. It didn't sit well with me. (I didn't know the details on this before this week.) Third, while I agree with his stances on many things, I don't think he is polished the way Hoyer is.

It would be one thing if he was charged and found guilty. I agree--I don't like that past situation that occurred; however, it was a long time ago. I would hope that people would change for the better as they get older.

Just suspicions.

I can't believe it myself.
