But Hoyer, pressed by Baier, distanced himself from those comments.

He added: "A wall is -- that protects people is not immoral.

Border Patrol officials have also said that walls are effective. ("We certainly do need a wall. Talk to any border agent and they will tell you that," Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said on Fox News' "Your World" last month.)

Hoyer suggested that Democrats were willing to compromise with the White House to end the shutdown, the longest in the nation's history.

The Berlin Wall was successful in keeping people in. That was the cruelty of it. Conversely, anybody here, citizen, legal non-citizens, illlegal migrants are all free to leave anytime they want. We don't want a wall to keep Americans or anybody else in, except in jails and prisons that protects law abiding people from the criminal element.

The President wants a wall to keep out those who are not legally authorized to be here, including a good many thieves, robbers, muggers, rapists, murderers, drug dealers, human traffickers, gang members, terrorists who make up a small but significant percentage of the illegal migrant population. That also protects law abiding people from the criminal element as well as those whose primary crime is violating our immigration laws and draining our social services to the breaking point.

As does even Obama's former Border Security Chief who was replaced by Trump and could be spewing a lot of sour grapes now. But he is prominently on the record that President Trump is absolutely right to be fighting for that fence/wall/barrier whatever it will be as that is 100% necessary in order for the Border Patrol to keep control of the border. It isn't and won't be the ONLY method used to secure the border, but it is a necessary component to regain control of the border.

I know ... I saw the kill zone outside of Berlin ... before and after. One of my brothers was in Berlin on Nov 9, 1989 - he sent me a piece of the wall.

That's my point. The Berlin wall separated families and tore people apart. Call that a "success" if you want, but I call that an atrocity. And was it really the wall that kept people in, or the fact that anyone who tried to get over it was run down with machine guns? Something tells me that had more to do with it.

Sure, in the short term the wall stood, but in the long term it was an utter failure. It became a global focal point of the atrocities of the Soviet Union. It rallied people against the Soviet Union. It didn't last. Let's not emulate that failure here.
