Am listening to Biden's speech only now, and he's speaking to the need for the country to unify as unity is the only "path forward."

Here's the litmus test for the Biden Administration's commitment to unity. In the coming weeks and months when they disagree with GOP policy proposals -- and there certainly will be disagreement -- do he and his surrogates attack the policy or do they attack the character and intentions of those advocating for those proposals? It's not unlike the mantra here on DP: attack the post, not the poster.

It will be interesting to watch this play out.

Have you never seen normal politics?

Not lately.

It occurs to me, those new to politics or only recently drawn into the field may not have other references. Thus, I posted one of our great politicians (if those two words can be together).

It'll be just great to hear Trumpists complaining about a lack of "unity" for the next four years.

Nearly a decade of vile dishonest attacks on Obama, right down to his place of birth and his religion. Four years of "**** your feelings" and "heh heh, elections have consequences". Those are the people who are going to be calling every last act other than the kissing of GOP ass a violation of Biden's promise to seek unity . . .

Unity, riiiiight, that's the ticket. Meanwhile back in her lair Madame Pelosi and her attack dog Chuckie Schumer are plotting ways to punish Trump, his family and anyone who ever worked for him. They run the IRS now you know.

Can't agree with you there. It's been slash-and-burn for some time now.

We could spend all day posting videos of politicians defending politicians on the other side as decent people. And we could spend all day posting videos of Trump calling his opponents evil. And we could not find any video of Trump defending anyone except himself and Putin.

Maybe we should just quit unnecessarily lionizing political figures. The whole “Joe extending his arms to embrace America” quote was stupid.

... and the remarkable thing there was not just McCain defending Obama as a person. It's the way he handled the woman at the end. It would have been very easy to dismiss her by saying (not inaccurately) "You're just a racist!" But McCain didn't attack. He called her "mam" and politely explained why he disagreed with her.

That's civility in the face of ignorance, and it is -- for the most part -- unheard of these days.

McCain could have explained how the narrative, and her belief, is racist. But that would have gone over most people's heads and caused a defensive response in commoners. Simpletons would say, "he called her a racist" when in fact he called the narrative and her belief racist.

Normal politics is not ad hom. Trump was an atrocity, not normal. You understand that, right?

Normal politics is legislation being created or changed by the legislature - not via EOs or court rulings.

I lean executive.

Edit: So much easier to say that today.

Yep, but Trump having been a jerk does give license to Biden to do likewise.

And not tweeting multiple times a day directly to the people. That is Orwellian.

Why is your litmus test one sided as it is Biden's Administration that has to act.

Just maybe both sides needs to learn to compromise for the good of American.

Agreed with many posters here; the test of 'unity' will not be from Biden or the Democrats; it will depend on whether the GOP will show a backbone like McCain had going forward, or kowtow to populists and insurrectionists as they have done to date. So far, the GOP has not held up their end of the "unity" bargain by giving Biden a working cabinet on Day 1... something Democrats gave Trump four years ago. So the test of "unity" right now is on how the Senate GOP will move to get Biden's cabinet in place. If it moves quickly, and they publicly censure as a body the outliers like Hawley, that will be a good first litmus test that "unity" may be had. If they fail to, then they will have tossed the towel in the ring on unity right from the get-go.

Mitch has the ball.

He's already been given that test. He failed miserably given that he called Cruz and Hawley Nazis just last week.
