How to Judge Character?

Which of these things tell us something meaningful about your character?

  • Skin Color

  • Gender

  • Sexual Orientation

  • Religion

  • Nationality

  • Ethnicity

  • Favorite Sports Team

  • Political Party Affiliation

  • Political Candidates you cheer for

  • Favorite Pizza Topping

Results are only viewable after voting.
There very clearly are right and wrong answers, and you should feel bad about yourself if you can't easily figure them out.
Really? Because NONE of those things in your list have anything to do with character.

Voting is something that you do. Political Parties and Politicians take action and support policy. They make decisions that can radically impact other people's lives. Their decisions can be immoral, unethical, corrupt, and criminal.
If you vote for candidates who are very obviously dishonest, corrupt, immoral, and unethical then you have done something that demonstrates your own character.

Is that the long way around saying you agree with me or are you saying voting is the only behavior that reveals character?

Martin Luther King Jr didn't say we shouldn't judge people. He said we should judge people based on the content of their character not the color of their skin.
So which of these pieces of information about a person can tell us something about their character...
Which of these things give us the bases for which we could begin to form a valid judgment about a person either positively or negatively?

Unfortunately it's too late, but I wish I would have put Vaccination Status on there too.
A person's conduct is how you judge their character.

None of the above.

Character is about how you treat all people, and especially the ones who can't do anything for you. ( I believe Forbes quoted this? )

And even then, it's not always easy to see how a person treats others.

Without going into private detail, sometimes, you don't find out till they have died.

Justice Potter Stewart of the SCOTUS could have been defining character when asked to identify obscenity, in 1964….

In 1964, Justice Potter Stewart tried to explain "hard-core" pornography, or what is obscene, by saying, "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced... ut I know it when I see it ..."

All of them, obviously.
You just shouldn't use it as a basis of discrimination. (Except for people who dislike pineapple on pizza. They should be sent to reeducation camps for their own good.)

to be of good character, one would need to be a SNOWFLAKE

:sneaky:

F - You Flunk!!!

If someone told you that they were a member of the Nazi Party and that Cheered for Hitler do you think they're likely to be a fine human being?

Just as joining the Democrat Party shows a clear lack of judgement. Abortion is the holocaust of our time whether you recognize it as such or not. Acceptance has been indoctrinated through education and pop culture just as Hitler's demonization of Jews and rationalation of their treatment was during that era.

Don't worry, I voted with the Majority.

I would say none of those give a clue to my character.
Who you support politically does to a degree. Apart from that not really.

"Character" is like "trust". You have to observe the person over time. How do they treat people? Do they deal with others fairly? Do they keep their word.

You just can't walk up to a complete stranger and judge their character or decide you can trust them.

.

Which says something about their character.

Perhaps it does. But in turn it definitely says something about the person who judges them for it.

Definite possibility, but this poll didn't include that option.

NONE of the listed "characteristics" are any metric when judging character.

1. The first three (Skin color, gender, sexual orientation) are immutable characteristics (despite people arguing otherwise).

2. Nationality and Ethnicity are birthrights, and depend on where one was born and who one's parents are.

3. Religion is also often a birthright issue, but one can choose to change this belief system, or ignore it entirely. IMO this neither enhances nor detracts from one's character.

4. The last four do not necessarily have anything to say about one's character, as those are choices one can exercise, ignore, or change at will.

Character is reflected in how one actually behaves. https://examples.yourdictionary.com/character-trait-examples.html

As there is no "Other" option, I could not vote.

Some people put pineapple on their pizza.

Well I picked the pizza topping thing as my only choice, but I try not to judge character on any of the other stuff. However, I'm not opposed to pineapple, I just prefer mushrooms, bell pepper and onions. Or an absolute supreme with so many topping they all make a nice blend. Are you a pineapple type? Would that be asking for TMI?
