Gay marriage has been legalized in all 50 states. Now, the LGBT community wants to become a protected class. This would mean that it would be illegal for private businesses or the state to discriminate against them. This has the objection of some Christians who personally object to the homosexual lifestyle. By now, you've already heard of Kim Davis and that baker. You've likely also heard of that religious freedom bill in Indiana which lists religious objection as a defense against an antidiscrimination lawsuit. Many in the LGBT community saw this bill as being one sided and Pence has been criticized for supporting it.

Utah on the other hand managed to pass a law that works for both sides. The Utah legislature passed two laws. SB 296 established housing and hiring protections for gay people while listing religious exemptions. It also protected religous people from being fired for talking about their religious or moral beliefs as long as they were not being disruptive. SB 297 allowed county clerks who objected to gay marriage on religious grounds to designate someone else to perform it in their place.

SB 97 allows the Utah MVD to refuse a vanity plate if it contains something disparaging of protected classes (sexual orientation, sex, or religion).
