How the Republicans could have saved the Senate

It's simple, if Bush had fired Rumsfeld a week or two before he "resigned" then the senate probably would have gone to the republicans. Some voters would have seen what Bush was doing by firing Rumsfeld and instead of voting democratically and looking for a change they might have gained faith in the GOP and voted republican.

Nonsense. If President Bush had attempted such a maneuver a couple of weeks before the election, it would have made him-- and by extension, the GOP-- smell desperate. The Democrats would have easily taken advantage of the situation.

If anything, it might have even taken attention away from some of their own blunders. Paging Mr. Kerry...

He wouldn't have looked (or smelled) desperate, in my opinion, except to the politically intelligent. People would have thought he had realized the wants of the majority, that most people hate Rumsfeld. If it hadn't won the Senate, it would at least have raised the president's approval rating.
