This is entirely on the Trump administration. Why would the US decline to use WHO test kits even as a temporary measure before the CDC developed their own tests?

How testing failures allowed coronavirus to sweep the U.S. - POLITICO

Why the United States declined to use the WHO test, even temporarily as a bridge until the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could produce its own test, remains a perplexing question and the key to the Trump administration’s failure to provide enough tests to identify the coronavirus infections before they could be passed on, according to POLITICO interviews with dozens of viral-disease experts, former officials and some officials within the administration’s health agencies.

The slowness of the testing regimen — which, administration officials acknowledged this week, is still not producing enough tests to meet the national demand — was the first, and most sweeping, of many failures. So far there have been confirmed cases in at least 23 states, and at least 15 deaths, while the stock market plunged and an otherwise healthy economy braced for a major disruption.
But neither the CDC nor the coronavirus task force chaired by Vice President Mike Pence would say who made the decision to forgo the WHO test and instead begin a protracted process of producing an American test, one that got delayed by manufacturing problems, possible lab contamination and logistical delays.

Sorry, mods, wrong forum. Please move to non-MSM.

The US kits were being designed to allow faster diagnosis without the need to be shipped to Atlanta for processing by the CDC. Apparently time between the swab and the test is a critical part of the issue. The US just is behind in its overall ability to do widespread testing.

The US could have and should have done more earlier. No excuse.

I wonder how long it will take before batches of face masks come out emblazoned with MAGA?

The spread has nothing to do with the "testing kits".. That's a political narrative, consider yourself duped.

So, you don’t think that identifying the infected will help to stop the spread? Did Trump tell you that? Consider yourself infected with the MAGA-virus.

Most people that get this, will not even know it, they will not even have symptoms. It's hype, and you've been duped by an all too willing media, and political establishment!

The CDC is chalk full of Obama leftovers.. Follow the politics, and the money, and who stands to gain from this? Welp, the healthcare industry just got 8.3 billion in free subsidies, the virologists got about a 3rd of that.. Ask yourself honest questions, and stop trusting the media, and those experts that stand to gain from their expertise.

Ever notice the same people who think this is all a hoax are also anti vaccers, anti education and, climate change deniers a d anti science.

In other words ignorant...

I have a hard time believing that anyone would think that Donald Trump could handle a situation like this.

Can there really be people that stupid?

Not true. It's when people are aware the virus is spreading that they take precautions. Without testing that awareness didn't happen soon enough and now we are about to be in it up to our ears.

Is the Trump administration in on all this hype? The president just announced a ban on european travel, a pretty drastic move.. Is he part of the hype?

Yes he is... He's not infallible ya know.

Banning European travel and Chinese travel are precautions and good ones. This virus will kill a lot of older American's, we care about them as well. The rest of us will be fine.

The virus is worldwide. Banning travel from one or two places does nothing. It's moot anyway since the virus is already established within the US. The main problem is that without testing there's no way to realistically estimate how bad it actually is. You can be sure it's worse than Trump admits. Only yesterday he was saying it would just go away soon.

Trumps technique for handling a crisis is to declare bankruptcy, not pay his bills and fold up his tent, **** everyone else.

How will that work in his crisis???

It is contagious for five days before symptoms appear...

It's a strange disease actually. It doesn't seem to kill children, and that, as virology goes, is weird. So, there is something to the immunity factor. Stop blaming Trump, he's listening to the "experts" like you were all hoping he would do, and now when he quotes the experts, he's lying, make up your damn minds.. Banning travel from hot spots is a good idea, period, doesn't matter if it's here already.

The human species has had the common cold virus since recorded history to where it is now, primarily a human disease not seen among other species. They still don't know what causes it, nor can they develop a vaccine for it. Viruses are incredibly resilient, at least some of them are.

You didn't know that the virus was spreading?

It is contagious for five days before symptoms appear...

Which means the goal is to avoid contagion. Widespread testing likely would have alerted the public that the virus was in their midst and we would have seen an earlier curtailment of large group gatherings and public events and more serious attention to precautions such as hand washing and avoiding close contact.

The US has tested 11k so far. South Korea tests 10k a day...so yes it has to do with test kits, the CDC and the Trump administrations attitude to the situation.

You mean Trump supporters basically. Well when they start dying in large numbers (since most are in the risk group), then they might change thier tune.
