How populist are you?

Populist left. Most similar to Bernie Sanders. Least similar to Donald Trump. No surprises.

There's a quiz in the link, I don't really put a lot of faith in these quizzes but, they can be fun and pique someone's curiosity.

I got most similar to Pablo Iglesias and least similar to Donald Trump.

Good link.

This IMO is how we should be framing the two-dimensional political spectrum, not in terms of the false economic/social spectra, onto which most people inevitably fall into a narrow bandwidth. The social political spectrum is simply too dated for us--some people on the fascist right favor authoritarianism against nonwhites yet are perfectly fine with gay marriage and marijuana legalization, for example.

Note that this populist/non-populist spectrum is very similar to the open-closed spectrum.

P.S. I got left of the vertical axis and just barely above the horizontal, meaning I'm basically a "soft populist" liberal. Seems about right.

According to this Quiz, I am most simlar to Evo Morales least to Pablo Iglesias.

I am not sure I agree...

We do need a new compass though as I agree the current ones are very skewed espcially since a lot depends on priority.

Populist left, closest to Obama, furthest from Trump.

Most similar to Bernie Sanders, least similar to Donald Trump. Surprise surprise. That said I don't like the "populist" moniker since an important component of populism is the desire to punish the government or the nation as a whole (an "elite," to be exact) for its abandonment of the working class. I want to improve the country, not punish it. Also, if you knew anything about Bernie Sanders, you'd know that punishing the government/country has nothing to do with his agenda.

I don't find the term "populist" to be very distinct. Every dictator in the world claims to be a man of the people. Like Trump.

I'm opposite authoritarian Trump. Big surprise...

Populism doesn't have to be sincere in its aims. It just has to capitalize on the anger of the working class.

Mexican President/closest; Trump/farthest

Really? Populism just means the working class is angry? Where did that definition come from?

"What is populism, and what does the term actually mean?

The pure people
In political science, populism is the idea that society is separated into two groups at odds with one another - "the pure people" and "the corrupt elite", according to Cas Mudde, author of Populism: A Very Short Introduction.

The common definition of populism is an ideology that sets "the people" against the "elite." Since the greatest amount of discontent is going to be found in economically disadvantaged groups those will invariably tend to be the working people. The people Sanders often resonates with in his economic message is the working class left, while Trump has targeted the white working class right by using a purely nativist approach.

Thanks to the OP for the post.

I'm dead-nuts in the center of Left-Right (vert axis), and about a third of the way above the Populist-non-Populist dividing line (horz axis). Looks to me like this thing thinks I'm a neutral-leaning moderate populist. If true, I kinda' like that moniker.

And interestingly,

You're most similar to:
Evo Morales
Bolivian president
Evo Morales has been president of Bolivia since 2006. He has successfully sought an end to term limits, champions indigenous rights - he is an Aymara - and pursued a policy of partial nationalisation.

You're least similar to:
Pablo Iglesias
Leader of Podemos, a leftwing Spanish party
Iglesias is a founder member of the anti-corruption, anti-austerity Podemos party, which props up the Spanish socialist minority government.

I had one question I took a neutral to, because I wasn't sure of the context. It was the question concerning Church authority, and I wasn't sure if they meant it's authority in public life, or in one's private life.

I came out most similar to Evo Morales which I've never heard of. Least similar to Pablo Iglesias. What this all means I haven't the faintest idea.
What it means is that you & I may often get along here, because we have the exact same quiz results!

From the BBC. Basically saying that populism is opposed to democracy:

Such thinking "can lead to people thinking they're infallible," Dr Moffitt said. "It restructures the political space in a new and scary way".

After all, if you're not with "the people" - then you must be against us.

That is why populist leaders are often viewed with suspicion - and why the term is often used as a type of insult for a politician who promises too much.

It's what Prof Bull says is called "irresponsible bidding".

"In order to garner support, they're quicker than the establishment party to make offers, or to promise to change things… that on closer inspection may not turn out to be feasible," he said.

"You might question how good that is for democracy," he added.

You're most similar to:
AMLO
Mexican president
Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected earlier this year on pledges to fight corruption, moderate the 'war' on drugs, and champion 'the forgotten people'.

You're least similar to:
Donald Trump
US president
Donald Trump is the president of the US. He has repeatedly failed to condemn radical rightwing activists, and for a time employed Steve Bannon on his presidential team.

Yes, populism should be regarded with extreme concern. It's not good to use the anger of the people to punish a shadowy "elite" rather than work to improve the country.

Five down and one to the right. Draw a line between Macron and Merkel on their graph and the middle of that line will be pretty close to where I ended up - remember, this is only regarding populism.

I'm least like Bernie, according to the web site. Go figure. I never could have guessed that on my own.
