Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Based on the available evidence, current scientists have been able to reconstruct detailed information about the planet's past. Earth formed 4.567 billion years ago out of the solar nebula, along with the Sun and the other planets. Initially molten, the outer layer of the planet cooled when water began accumulating in the atmosphere when the planet was about half its current radius, resulting in the solid crust. The moon formed soon afterwards, possibly as the result of the impact with a Mars-sized object known as Theia. Outgassing and volcanic activity produced the primordial atmosphere; condensing water vapor, augmented by ice delivered by comets, produced the oceans.[6] The highly energetic chemistry is believed to have produced a self-replicating molecule around 4 billion years ago, and half a billion years later, the last common ancestor of all life lived.[7]

Young Earth creationism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Young Earth creationism is a religious doctrine which teaches that the Earth and life on Earth were created by a direct action of God relatively recently (about 6,000 years ago). It is held by Christians and Jews who believe that the Hebrew text of Genesis can only mean a literal six (24-Hour) day account of creation, that evidence for a strictly factual interpretation of the text is present in the world today, and that scientific evidence does not support Darwinian evolution or geological uniformitarianism.

Many of its adherents are active in the development of Creation Science, a creationist endeavor that holds that the events associated with supernatural creation can be evidenced and modeled through an interpretation of the scientific method. There is no support for a "young Earth" theory in professional science journals or among professional science organizations[1], which Young Earth Creationists claim is often due to discrimination and censorship.

You may now debate.

I think you meant to put some options for us. Probably 4 billion or 6,000. I'll go with 6,000

I did. :) You can vote now. I didn't want to put exact numbers(in the poll options) because some believe it to be 6 other 10 thousand years.

I voted "A few Billion, Why?"

However, I do believe, at least to some extent, in Creationism (or at least some form of it.)

I think that the first sentences from each of the quoted Wiki articles pretty much tell the story:

"Based on the available evidence, current scientists have been able to reconstruct detailed information about the planet's past."

Versus

"Young Earth creationism is a religious doctrine which teaches that the Earth and life on Earth were created by a direct action of God relatively recently (about 6,000 years ago)."

You're kidding, right?
Remember, this 6000 year old routine was developed in a Church meeting in the 14th or 15th century Remember that they did not even believe the earth revolved around the Sun. I am Christian Man, and I believe in God, but If I look at my hand and see five fingers, I am gonna tell you I have five fingers even if some christians try tell me I only have three, and may try to point out in the Bible where it says three. No matter what some believe, knowledge does grow and mankind does progress. God can do anything, even though some folks like to limit what God can do. We are no longer threatening Iran with swords, we have nuclear bombs. Things are not just Black, Gray, and White. There are shades of all colors of the spectrum in evidence.

got a source for that claim?

Offhand, No. I got that number from Sam Harris when he was talking to the National Academy of Scientists. The only numbers I could come up with (in 2 minutes mind you) were from CBS's creationism poll. Which puts the numbers closer to 37% and not 44%.

Poll: Creationism Trumps Evolution

I don't know if Sam cites his sources on his website, or where he got the 44% number, But I'll look. Until then, is the idea the that 37% of Americans want Creationism taught EXCLUSIVELY in SCIENCE classrooms (w/ no mention of evolution) not alarming to you?

Especially considering that Intelligent Design isn't science, and at best a hypothesis that should be no sooner taught than the stork theory on child birth.

6000-10,000. Bcuz that is when god wanted to do it. The "dinosaur fossils" are actually just funny rocks which were put there by god to trick us. ;)

Well I voted for the few billion years old.

The thing that is scary to people about science, is that it is stripping away our self-centered belief of human importance. When you consider the vastness of space and time, we humans and all our "issues" are a rather insignificant in the flow of the universe. We are but a speck of life, inhabiting a speck of dust in the grand scheme of things.
Now I am not saying our issues are unimportant to us( we cannot deny the world in which we live), but to the rest of the universe we are unimportant. And somehow to me that is comforting.

thanks for the link
however, it only speaks to those who believe in Evolution v Creationism
some, like i used to, believe(d) in creationism do not take genesis literally
thus one can believe in Creationism and the Billions of years it took for man to come on the scene
it does not have a question, that i saw that designates one polling group as those who believe the universe is only 6000 years old

From what this poll says so far, I do believe that a majority of DP peoples think "A Few Billion."

What about an option for "6 billion human years"/"6000 years plus 7 god days".;)

Anyone still believe the earth is flat, or that little pixies carry our bodies back to earth when we jump?
