We would never have defeated the British in the war of independence or the war of 1812 if it wasn't for France. In the revolution, they gave us aid, supplies, troops etc. If Napoleon wasn't conquering Europe in 1812, the Brits would have shown their strength to us and destroyed us. So maybe we should thank the French.
Germany severely weakened the French and the Brits in WW1, which ended their long stand as the most powerful countries. WW1 (and to an extent, WW2...but WW1 really hurt France and Britain more than WW2) allowed us, some 30 years later, to become a superpower. So France directly and Germany indirectly helped us to achieve the superpower status we have today.
