How Joe Biden Handed the Presidency to Donald Trump

At a fateful event last summer, Barack Obama, George Clooney, and others were stunned by Biden’s weakness and confusion. Why did he and his advisers decide to conceal his condition from the public and campaign for reëlection?

Biden deserves to be completely condemned by history for all of this. As well as Jill Biden and the people in his orbit who let this go on and gaslighted everyone by saying "it's just a stutter" or that he was jetlagged during the June 27 debate. And the people in the media that ran interference for him.
 
Should Joe Biden have dropped out of the race earlier? Absolutely. Did he hand the race to Trump? Perhaps, but the many voters who chose to stay home and sit on their asses also got Trump elected. They are in FAFO mode now.

I will remember Biden for all he achieved during his Presidency. Like the Infrastructure Bill, the CHIPS Act, lowering the price of Insulin and an economy that was the envy of the world. Simpletons will remember him in history for not dropping out of the race.
 
Had Biden not run for re-election, and Americans had the opportunity to pick a Democratic candidate, I believe that person would have won.
 
If Biden had genuine and serious cognitive impairment then he's pretty much the one person who really can't and shouldn't be blamed for trying to run.

Of course if he had genuine and serious cognitive impairment this would just be a conspiracy theory about those around him... trying to lose the election...? Besides perhaps (and it's a stretch even then) his family, why the hell would any Democrats want someone with serious impairment as their candidate? They would all - particularly Harris - have had overwhelmingly good reasons to pressure him to decline the nomination.

The most logical conclusion, consistent with the publicly-known facts, is that his decline was at most fairly mild and managed. His grasp on reality in 2024 was demonstrably better than Trump's was even in 2020! He definitely shouldn't have run, and as with most old people there doubtless was some cognitive decline, but this "Democratic conspiracy to lose the election" has always been rather suspect at best.
 
Just like everyone remembers Neville Chamberlain for his domestic policies

And who might that candidate have been? Harris was a fine candidate but she was a woman and the electorate was in the mood for a show. They are certainly getting that. It is going to cost them dearly though. I wish Biden had run and won again. He was at least cognitive enough to know who to ask when he did not have a clue. Having a petulant child who has never been told no AND is suffering from worsening dementia is the worst possible combo for a President.
 
Harris may have had a chance, IMO, had Biden stepped down after 2 years and left Harris to pick a VP and finish out the second half of the term. Perhaps Jill didn't want to give up Her position?
I still would have voted third party.
As neither party is going to resolve any issue, look for and take advantage of the opportunities they create.

Perhaps....but likely only if that person were male.

There's still quite a bit of misogyny out there, among voters of all political persuasions.
 
Yes, it's shameful but even more than that it was dangerous. They lied, they put a man in the WH who wasn't capable of doing the job. His Presidency was a mess that grew progressively worse and we are all lucky it didn't result in an armed conflict for the U.S.. Jill, his family, his closest aids all deserve to be pilloried for what they did. Sadly, most of the dems are still denying they did anything wrong.

Harris was a lousy candidate. Her well-known word salads were empty and a bit confusing. The only thing she seemed to know was how she grew up, and she apparently even got that wrong. She could say what she wanted to have (affordable housing) but had no thoughts on how to do it - or anything else. Being a woman had nothing to do with her loss. She just didn't know anything, and her VP candidate was just as air-headed as she was.

No, every person who voted for trump knew exactly what he/she/they was doing. Every voter who chose trump wanted him there, despite his known disqualifications for the office.

No, blaming Harris for voters' reinstating trump isn't valid. It's also silly.

Everyone who voted for trump knew that he is incompetent, corrupt, greedy, hateful, dishonest, and a threat to our national security. Blame them.
 

Yes. All great accomplishments. How many were undone or twisted by Trump within his first 100 days in office?

What good are such accomplishments if they are undone so quickly? Especially when the stakes are so high? We are not praising a child's ability to build really good sandcastles at the beach only to see them washed away by the tide or kicked apart by some bullying kid. This is life and death, and Joe Biden was not suited for the task.

Harris was very qualified. But what did the GOP do? Concentrate on her having had sex years before with another Black American. Then again, maybe this was also something you didn't notice.

The poor guy should be credited for building up the Royal Air Force and the country's radar system before Churchill took over, certainly.

History was perhaps a bit too unkind to the poor bastard.

Trump is full of lies and threats. Of law-breaking and SCOTUS-ignoring. Of selling us out to the authoritarians of the world. Of betraying our friends and allies.

But letting voters off the hook for choosing to reinstate the train wreck, the security threat, the antidemocratic, lawless lowlife trump???

Hell, no. These people knew exactly what they were doing to the country and to the rest of us. And they wanted him to damage the USA, if not to destroy it.

Sorry to go off. Biden should have taken himself out, much, much earlier. (Pelosi et al should have intervened, much, much earlier.)

But the fact so many people knew what trump is and still decided to vote for him - or to "sit this one out" by voting 3rd party or not voting at all - is something I still find gobsmackingly insane. Surreal. That so many Americans seem to believe trump is the direction the country should take, the path we should travel now, is....a nightmare.

No. I will not absolve any of the "Americans" who voted for trump. Or who voted 3rd party. Or who didn't vote for the POTUS. The stakes - keeping trump away from political power - were too high.

There's simply no excuse for that kind of deliberate sabotage of our nation, of our friends and allies, and of all of us.
 
I dunno, it's hard for me to hate and be angry at Joe. He's like a senile old grandpa suffering from dementia.
