Furious Chinese Communists have begun arresting innocent Canadians in retaliation. So far, three of these “revenge hostages” have been taken and are being held in secret jails on vague charges. Beijing hints that the hostage count may grow if Meng is not freed and fast.

Even for a thuggish regime like China’s, this kind of action is almost unprecedented.

So who is Meng Wanzhou?

[Snip]

But Huawei is much more than an innocent manufacturer of smartphones.

It is a spy agency of the Chinese Communist Party.

How do we know?

Because the party has repeatedly said so.

First in 2015 and then again in June 2017, the party declared that all Chinese companies must collaborate in gathering intelligence.

“All organizations and citizens,” reads Article 7 of China’s National Intelligence Law, “must support, assist with, and collaborate in national intelligence work, and guard the national intelligence work secrets they are privy to.”

All Chinese companies, whether they are private or owned by the state, are now part and parcel of the party’s massive overseas espionage campaign.

So as China takes Canadian prisoners, the US wiil try her or let her plea then fine her and cut her loose. Then she will continue doing it at China’s direction. As the USA tries her, I wonder what they will do. Jail US visiting executives and trade technology secrets for release?

Sounds like fun a’ comin!

A "China First" policy. Who woulda' thunk it? "America First." Does it sound familiar and make all USA Corps/Companies spies? Wake up.

All of our bets on China have been wrong

All of our bets on China have been wrong - Asia Times

Oddly, this rising hostility has sprung from exactly the opposite set of circumstances that created the foundations for the original Cold War. In contrast to diplomat and historian George Kennan’s famous telegram about the old Soviet Union (which correctly rebutted US president Franklin D Roosevelt’s naïve assumptions about Josef Stalin and provided the diplomatic underpinnings for a sustained policy of Western containment after World War II), today’s Cold War 2.0 is typified by what author James Mann calls the West’s “China fantasy,” a notion encapsulated by former US president George W Bush’s remark: “Trade freely with China, and time is on our side.”

The main idea was that Beijing would ultimately internalize Western norms and values as it integrated and prospered via an increasingly globalized world economy. It is worth recalling that similarly optimistic assessments about trade and globalization were made about the world on the threshold of World War I.

But much as the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand quickly dispelled early-20th-century optimism, a similarly rapid, albeit less dramatic, reassessment of China is now under way, especially given the increasingly autocratic nature of the current regime under President Xi Jinping. Most striking is that even long-standing China doves are now echoing the language of old-guard hawks, who have long viewed trade with China as a zero-sum game.

I've said it countless times before, here on DP and elsewhere:
If we piss China off enough, they won't start any shooting war, they'll just commence a five year internal austerity plan that calls for a nationwide sacrifice "for the good of all China" and inform the wealthy Chinese elites that they are not to invest in any US ventures for the duration, and they will slowly and methodically put the brakes on all US manufacturing, and institute rolling sanctions.

Wal-Mart will fall first, you can guess the rest.
The Chinese will "Party like it's 1949" for a while, just long enough to knock our collective dicks in the dirt.
Meanwhile, Chinese investments in their new Silk Road to the rest of the world will continue apace, and we will be rendered irrelevant.
Time flows differently for a six thousand year old society with a strong and unbroken sense of history.
To the Chinese, the United States is a tiny blip on their timeline, the smallest fraction of a millennium.

And make no mistake about it, Chinese think in millennial terms, and they take the long-term approach when they see fit to do so.
Our markets live and die on what happens in the next quarter.
