House votes to restrict Confederate flag in national cemeteries[W:707]

States had the power to secede for over a century before the Civil War, and we were still a union and a nation.

No they didn't have that power. Some just asserted that they did. We thoroughly disabused people of that notion via the war.

One more thought, cowboy...The entire US population in 1910 was less than a hundred million.

No, as sad as that stain was on our nation, and it was (like slavery) -- a hundred million Indians were not killed under the US Flag. Not even close. Not even close to being close.

lol.

We weren't even a nation for a century before the war, and you're wrong.

The question was settled at the 1788 Convention.

so you people want to piss on our great grandfather's graves, how about banning the American flag ,the flag that flew over the worlds largest genocide ,the AMERICAN INDIAN genocide, you liberal socialist want it both ways.

Dude. Just because you want to include wildly inflated numbers and make rather silly accusations doesn't make either of them true...because they aren't. Not even close. Here's a bit of guidance - the more incredible the numbers you post, the greater the requirement for solid proof to back them up...and you have no such proof. All you have is wild accusation that belongs in the conspiracy-theory section.

America tried to end slavery. Your boys south of the Mason-Dixon didn't want to hear it, and so decided to not only secede but also start a war about it. They swore allegiance to the Confederacy against the United States of America. Today, we'd call such people terrorists.

It's only now that some want to do everything they can to erase that war from our history.
On the contrary, smashing the Confederacy is one of the greatest things the United States has ever done. Abolishing slavery and perfecting popular government should be celebrated. What should not be remembered in any positive light is the effort by the Confederates to preserve slavery, no matter how bravely or selflessly they may have fought in pursuit of that ignoble goal. Setting up monuments for Confederate forces in a Northern state that they invaded as part of their counterrevolution is a ridiculous level of pandering. If I didn't know any better I'd question who won the Civil War based on that alone.
the north opted to kill people, not because slavery exists, but because they wanted to prevent them leaving the Union.

I am failing to see how that is morally right

The North didn't start the Civil War, but even if it did, preventing Southern aristocrats from tearing the world's largest republic in two to preserve slavery is easily justifiable.

^ This.

nope. a civil war is a fight between citizens. the south left. they did not identify as citizens, and did not fight to control the union

do you call the Revolution a civil war too?

COOKOO COOKOO

We are so lucky to have you here. Imagine all of us believing in a Civil War just because every United States history book talks about it. Without you we would all have lived on in ignorance. Thank you for setting the world straight on REAL history.

If Texas were to secede from the nation today, would you and the others on the left advocate waging war against them? Would you insist upon an armed attack?

I could get a job as a spy! Cool!

In actuality so few Texans actually want to secede, the only way it would occur would be at the hands of an extremist minority that, would probably have to do it by some sort of force, if my some miracle they succeeded and declared, violence would surely follow.

As long as the first-o-da-munt checks keep rolling in, the illegals would back anything.

Yes. I am aware of that. It was an example for the question. I could have used Alaska, Hawaii, Maine... but I chose to use Texas. My question was would the left advocate waging war if a state decided that it wished to secede from this nation and actually did it? I honestly do not believe that war would be waged.

Worked out so well last time, eh?

The Civil War was the deadliest war that this country has ever seen. More Americans died in that war than any other. I do not think that our country would be willing to take up arms against another state in the union. Brothers versus brothers, and cousins versus cousins isn't likely to happen.

I wouldn't spend much time thinking about it -- it's not going to happen.

You are most likely right. However, Hawaii has had an active movement wanting to secede from the United States for decades. They actually claim that Kingdom of Hawaii never properly joined the union. Then there are a few in Texas that have brought this up but that is a tiny number of people. It could happen. Especially if President Trump really makes some mad. California, Oregon, and Washington maybe?
