House Republicans are attempting to have one final hurrah before they give up their majority control of House committees in January. At issue is that Comey wants to testify in public so that Republicans can't selectively release bits of his statements out of context for further political screwery.

Comey has vowed to fight the subpoena, saying, “While the authority for Congressional subpoenas is broad, it does not cover the right to misuse closed hearings as a political stunt to promote political as opposed to legislative agendas.”

Under normal circumstances he would eventually lose such a struggle. However, seeing as Republicans waited til after midterms to issue their subpoenas, Comey will most likely be able to run out the clock until Democrats take over. At that point, if he still wants to testify, he can have his way and do so publicly.

House Republicans served up some subpoenas with their Thanksgiving turkey this week, issuing last-minute demands for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch to appear for closed-door testimony on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, respectively.

The subpoenas, issued Wednesday but revealed publicly Thanksgiving morning, completed the threats issued by GOP committee chairman Bob Goodlatte earlier in the week.

Comey had rejected an earlier invitation from the committee to testify privately and instead asked for a public hearing. Democrats say they prefer the hearing to be public as well.

You believe the Comey BS, eh?

In a private hearing he wouldn't be able to avoid answering questions because of classified information or conduct; or about the counterintelligence operation mounted against candidate Trump in 2016. In a public hearing he can refuse to answer those kinds of questions.

And, of course, the Dems don't want him being put on the spot either, so of course, they agree with him.

It doesn't matter. The Congressional investigation into the corrupt Obama administration is over.

The reply from Comey was perfect. Very much on the nose.

I would have given them a two word answer.

Funny how the crooked GOP didn’t do this BEFORE the midterms which proves this is nothing more than a political stunt. As usual, you are showing your gullibility.

Actually, this won't be the first time Comey has been asked to speak. The last time, he also insisted on a public hearing and sure enough...he refused to answer questions over and over because of the very reasons I mentioned.

It's not gullibility to recognize a tactic that has already been used.

Aren't the republicans pathetic?

I hope the democrats take notes of this sleazy ploy. Come January they better not take the high road with the republicans. They better go after trump, his family and EVERY crooked republican who has defended and supported the orange a-hole.

agree 100%

The last time he testified in public he refuse to answer a bunch of questions because he said they were classified. In a closed door he can't refuse to answer those types of questions. Comey welcomed to go to the press and tell them what he told congress under oath as long as its not classified.

He also testified behind closed doors and did not appreciate the one sided report that came out of it.

Also a lot of his testimony was about ongoing investigations that he may be free to speak about now.

He is welcome to take his case to the press after he testifies behind closed doors. Of course he could leak it to his professor friend. He has experience doing that.

Your comments don’t refute anything I’ve said. The gop ******s did this as a political stunt or they would have done it before the midterms. To think otherwise is to prove oneself dishonest or dumb.

He wants to do it in public setting so the other folks will know what he said before they get interviewed, it doesn’t work that way does it?

The Congressmen just want some answers that he doesn't want to have to give. That's all this nonsense is about.

But as I said...it doesn't matter. The game is going to be played by both sides and we, the public, will know nothing new.

Yeah they wanted answers so bad they waited until AFTER the midterms to request it when they could have done so before the midterms. It’s ok you’ve already demonstrated what I’ve said that this is nothing more than a political stunt by ***** GOP members.

Goodlatte & Friends is a wave too late here.

The worm turns on 3 January 2019.

They tried before the midterms. He resisted giving them using this same transparent tactic.

Now...in the couple months BEFORE the midterms ALL of the House members were campaigning. Nobody was doing anything else. Heck, even Mueller stopped.

Your rhetoric is nonsense.

Bravo. Ya I hope you get your wish. It'll show America what mean spirited, angry trash the Dumbocrats really are.
So yes indeed. I hope they try very hard to utterly destroy Trump, his wife and his kids.

The only rhetoric that is Nonsense is coming from you in trying to say they had to wait until after the midterms like they were so incompetent they couldn’t campaign and bring about subpoena. Your comments are straight up dumb or dishonest, which one?

Why on Earth is it so important to you that this is happening after the midterms?
What the hell difference does it make?

Because it is nothing more than a political stunt. That’s the difference.

Wait a minute. You don't know that...you think that. Its your opinion.
And the point some have made that in private he can be pressed to actually answer all questions or face perjury charges, is a valid argument.

It would have made more sense as a political stunt before the election.

Nope it is fact if they cared they would have done it before the midterms.

It would have made more sense as a political stunt before the election.

Nope, the GOP know they would have lost which is why it is nothing more than a political stunt now.
