The House passed a stopgap government-funding measure Thursday night that includes $5.7 billion for President Trump’s wall on the Mexican border and additional security — raising the odds that a shutdown will begin Friday.

Passage of the measure over united Democratic opposition passes the hot potato to the Senate, which is set to consider the bill Friday. The bill is not expected to pass the Senate, where Democrats have rejected money for Trump’s wall.

Well...

It does not take 60 votes to pass an ordinary bill in the Senate; it takes a majority of the senators voting. If everyone is present, it takes 51 votes, or 50 votes if the vice president votes to break the tie. Under the current rules of the Senate–which can be altered by a majority vote–it takes 60 votes to proceed to a vote on a bill when some senators want to continue debate forever, or filibuster.

That was back in 2009, things have changed since then...

The nuclear option is a parliamentary procedure that allows the United States Senate to override a rule – specifically the 60-vote rule to close debate – by a simple majority of 51 votes, rather than the two-thirds supermajority normally required to amend the rules. The option is invoked when the majority leader raises a point of order that only a simple majority is needed to close debate on certain matters. The presiding officer denies the point of order based on Senate rules, but the ruling of the chair is then appealed and overturned by majority vote, establishing new precedent.

You can thank the Democrats under Harry Reid for this option if it is used today:

In 2013, Democrats, led by then-Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, finally gave in to frustration over the refusal by the chamber’s Republican minority to approve President Barack Obama’s appointees, notably appeals-court judges. With the support of 52 Democrats, Reid succeeded in deploying the nuclear option, easing passage of several of Obama’s executive-branch and judicial nominees.

All the Republicans have to do this session is exercise the "nuclear option" and the bill should pass as is.

That would be a horrifically stupid, much more consequential mistake on their part, and one that would have nothing to do with Reid.

Republicans are about to lose control of the House, so it would be the only time they'd get to do it, then Democrats will have the power to pass ANY legislation by simple majority when the political winds complete their regaining of the WH and Senate, and Republicans will be helpless to stop them.

I don't know about "only in America". Have you seen all the Brexit crap?

IMO, with this crop of Democrats and the highly partisan social clime? They would do it anyway anytime the (proposed) minority Republicans tried to "debate forever or filibuster."

Might as well get what you can while you can as far as I can see.

It's not the nuclear option. The senate passed a bill. Reconciliation requires a simple majority. It's possible that this was even planned to avoid a Senate Filibuster.

It's an interesting back and forth. Right now Pelosi is eating some crow.
