At the heart of the conflict is that Democrats don't trust Barr to redact the full Mueller report without corrupt intent. In order to restore trust to the redaction system, they want a bipartisan closed-door session to review the report so we know that a narrative intended to protect the President hasn't been crafted.

WASHINGTON - The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted to authorize a subpoena for the full, unredacted report by special counsel Robert Mueller on Russian interference in the U.S election and alleged obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump.

The committee took the action after Attorney General William Barr told Congress that he intends later this month to provide a report to lawmakers with certain material removed. The subpoena for the nearly 400-page report, along with underlying documents, will not be issued until that is approved by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

"The Constitution charges Congress with holding the president accountable for alleged official misconduct. That job requires us to evaluate the evidence for ourselves — not the attorney general's summary, not a substantially redacted synopsis, but the full report and the underlying evidence," Nadler said in his opening remarks Wednesday, adding that so far, Barr has "refused" to work with him to help obtain access to materials Nadler said his committee is entitled to under the law.

Barr sent a letter to chairmen of the House and Senate judiciary committees — Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y. — with an updated timeline. Nadler and other Democrats had asked for a complete release by April 2, but Barr said it would a take little longer to make the necessary redactions to protect grand jury material, sources and methods, and ongoing investigations, a process that Mueller is assisting in.

This is good: Representative Collins no longer wants the full report to be released. Twenty days ago, the House voted 420-0 for the full report to be released. Yes, that means Collins was included in that vote. What happened between 20 days ago and today to cause his position to go from "release the full report" to "only Barr should be able to filter it?"

Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, argued in his opening remarks Wednesday that a subpoena for the Mueller report would command the attorney general to break the law.

"The attorney general's entire mandate is to enforce the law, and he’s expressly forbidden from providing grand jury material outside of the department, with very limited and narrow exceptions. Congress is not one of those exceptions, and the chairman knows it," Collins said.

And Barr could simply go to a judge and request that he clear the grand jury materials for release.

This is going to be a real sticking point that challenges this country's ability to trust its system of governance. If the House doesn't trust the DOJ, we've got some serious issues and dysfunction. The reasons some material will be redacted is within the letter of the law, and now there's an attempt to circumvent that because os suspicions the House has about Barr's ability to perform his duties as AG. This is going to be interesting.

This is why it was so important for Democrats to retake the House last November. We understood that institutions that operated on trust and democratic norms had collapsed under Trump, and that it was up to institutions with actual enforcement powers to fill the vacuum.

If Republicans had kept the House, the Mueller investigation would have been swept under the rug and there wouldn't have been a single thing we could have done about it.

Trump gained .2 points in the polls since the Barr memo was released. In other words, his approval has changed as much as if the memo that "exonerates" him hadn't come out at all.

I wonder how the public's feelings about that memo will evolve the longer Republicans fight a full release of a report they claim exonerates him.

Nadler is not gonna get an unredacted report. He had his own Spartacus moment this morning, but that's about all he was capable of doing ... and he knows it.

Yawn. The important thing here is that precedent matters. I thought it was a bad idea for DOJ to turn over all the Clinton email info in 2016, but gosh, they did anyhow, so that’s now the rule.

A system where DOJ only discloses info to Congress about Democrats isn't the way our gov't works.

For as long as Republicans argue that Democrats should only be allowed to see the report that Barr says they can see, the more afraid and corrupt Republicans appear.

This paragraph in the article is interesting;

"The measure also authorizes the committee to issue subpoenas for documents and testimony from five individuals: former White House counsel Don McGahn, former Trump adviser and White House strategist Steve Bannon, former White House communications director Hope Hicks, former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and former White House deputy counsel Ann Donaldson.

“We believe that these individuals may have received documents from the White House in preparation for their interviews with the special counsel. We also believe that these individuals may have turned this information over to their private attorneys,”

What does that really mean? The way I read it, it means that the Judiciary Committee has reason to believe that the people mentioned, Priebus, Bannon, McGahn, Donaldson and Hope Hicks, had received instructions from the White House prior to their interviews with the special counsel and that information was turned over to their own personal attorneys. This also means that they were all coached as to what to say in order to coordinate their stories to the special counsel. If anyone remembers both Hope Hicks and Steve Bannon refused to answer any questions in their interviews by the House Intelligence Committee, both claiming 'executive privilege'.

To get a sense of how the White House has prepared for these investigation. In addition to Trump's own personal attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, and White House counsel Emmet Flood, the White House has quickly assembled a stable of top-notch lawyers. Newly arrived White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, has hired 17 lawyers in recent weeks to help in the effort. The strategy to strongly assert the president’s executive privilege. The stage has been set for a potential clash between the branches of government. Of particular concern to Democrats is whether or not the White House will seek to use executive privilege to keep private any portions of Mueller’s report that addresses alleged obstruction of justice by Trump.

“It’s almost as if he’s building a law firm within a government entity,” Jay Sekulow said. Cipollone’s goal is to try to find common ground with the congressional Democrats in responding to their subpoenas when he can, but draw a clear line that would protect the confidentiality of the office of the presidency.

The administration is defined entirely by corruption and self serving. We all know that if Trump genuinely believed the report was half as exculpatory as he boasts, he would have ordered Barr to release it to the public last week, classified info and all. He would have burned every ongoing investigation and intelligence asset to the ground to get it to the public.
