It was good to see at least one-third of the Democrats also voted yea despite the fact during the debates this morning on CSPAN all speaking Democrats roundly condemned the idea of a border fence. Overall vote was 283 yea 138 nay. That was in part because the Demos see the current strategy of Republicans pushing through smaller chunks of immigration and home security legislation instead of a comprehensive plan as more likely to succeed on the less controversial issues they would prefer to monkeywrench. And many hate the idea of a fence because it would of course be a huge impediment to a major part of the wide open low end skilled illegal crossings now occurring. Just one part of many holes that eventually need to be plugged though in this case one that also has serious national security implications. Some will still get through our southern borders with this fence that only covers 1/3 of the border. However they won't be driving 4wd vehicles full of people through anymore, simply walking across the Rio Grand from the many border towns, or trashing our border national parks.

Sorry IMO, the fence is a waste of time. We already have laws on the books that deal with illegal immigration, the key thing is to ENFORCE THE LAWS WE ALREADY HAVE.

I heard several representatives on the radio talking about this bill - It is a COMPLETE CROCK! According to them:

1. It approves a 700 mile fence - not consecutive 700 miles, and only 700 miles of 2,000 miles required.

2. Funding was not authorized for the fence. The article says the money for the fence will come in another bill. The Senators said not to hold your breath waiting for the funding because it ain't coming! They said any - ANY - new legislation coming out is to appease the voters and make them think that either side is doing anything about the Illegal Immigration problem, like passing a bill that authorizes a fence that will never be erected due to lack of funding! They said every law we need to enforce and deal with the problem already exists! Enforcing the hiring laws which will eliminate jobs and cutting off social programs would force the majority of Illegals back home.

3. They say what none of the authors or supporters of this bill will highlight is that it calls for the agreement of the Mexican Goverment to build a fence in any area. Yup - you heard me - we have to aks the Mexican Goverment if we can erect a fence on our side of the border in any area. If they say 'No', we can not build a freakin' fence on our own soil!

In this I agree. I have said from the beginnng here that I do not believe politicians can be trusted anymore. Especially the ones that have been in for years. Repbulican or Democrat.
