Homeless shelter

Some of those non-existent compassionate conservatives have spent thousands of their own dollars and countless manhours to CREATE those shelters.

well, ms beyonce is clearly not one of them......;-)

don't ask me, i live where no boogie men can get me.

in all seriousness, what don't you get about "EX"? those people have paid their debt and deserve a chance to rebuild their lives. it's your problem to deal with if you are uncomfortable.

So how about we build a shelter right next to your home that will provide housing for a few dozen ex-cons? I'm sure you wouldn't object to that because as you said, they've paid their debt to society. Anyone who would have a problem with that is obviously a prejudiced idiot, right?

ex cons have every right to be treated with respect. more than likely, she's got neighbors surfing for child porn that would pose more of a threat to her family than an ex con who served time for drugs.

and no, i didn't say she was an idiot. i said it was her issue to deal with if she was uncomfortable.

would i EMBRACE a homeless shelter next door? no. would i throw a fit about it? no. i would investigate and form my opinions when i knew all the facts.

Quite frankly I think she is a lib trolling ( ;) ) ALA Chickie...OR...Maybe its the real Beyonce!

You might be surprised how many half way houses are out there in your neighborhood already...they DO have to live somewhere and sooner or later they WILL be living in your heighborhoods.

I guess that's why the govt forces ex-con sex offenders to register and won't let them live near schools and churches. I don't think all ex-cons should be treated like criminals, but you should have the right to know what kind of excons are living in your area. many types of crime and therefore ex-cons have high rates of repeat offense.

one could argue that coming here and asking questions is a form of investigation, albeit a very ineffective one.

You made fun of her opposition to having ex-cons near her by arguing that they had paid their debt to society and that her fears were unfounded. I'm asking whether you actually believe that. I certainly don't, and I doubt many others do.

The fact is that an overwhelming majority of people would object to the construction of a homeless shelter near their house, and with good reason.

Believe me, they're already living in my neighborhood. I see homeless people and crackheads all the time. My school also had a dorm that was located two doors down from a homeless shelter, so I know exactly what that's like. I can confidently say that it sucks and that nobody would ever choose to live near one of those.

she doesn't even KNOW if excons will be living there...she ASSUMED homeless people are ex cons.

My oldest son used to live in an apartment down the street from a shelter. They had door to door crack dealers and prostitutes.

I find it hard to buy Ms Beyonce's story. Municipalities rarely want to locate homeless shelters in "good neighborhoods". (lowers property values and decreases the tax base) Almost every shelter I have ever seen has been in the ****tiest neighborhood in town.

since when does homeless = ex con?

homeless doesn't mean criminal.

Five myths about America's homeless

she doesn't even KNOW if excons will be living there...she ASSUMED homeless people are ex cons.

I asked you if you would object to a shelter that housed ex-cons and you responded by saying that you wouldn't object to a homeless shelter. It looks like she's not the only one who associates the two.

not so......she started the thread assuming such. i don't assume that.

so what? what's your point?

You: "she doesn't even KNOW if excons will be living there...she ASSUMED homeless people are ex cons."

Me: "I asked you if you would object to a shelter that housed ex-cons and you responded by saying that you wouldn't object to a homeless shelter. It looks like she's not the only one who associates the two."

The point is that people associate the homeless with all manners of problems, ranging from mental illness to criminality. They're not wrong.

Im thinking it is highly unlikely they would place a Homeless Shelter in a residential area, especially since they arent typically zoned for it. Halfway houses...thats another story. Those are everywhere and most people dont know about it nor are there usually any problems. That being said...if they dont have homeless shelters it doesnt mean they wont have a homeless problem and those people (yes...they are still people...) will end up ssomewhere.

It may be different elsewhere, but homeless shelters are all over NY. I also very much doubt that anyone doesn't know about a homeless shelter near them - it's sort of hard to miss the line of people sleeping on the sidewalk outside. While it's true that the people would just be homeless elsewhere, shelters serve as gathering points for said homeless people, meaning that there will be many more in the area than there otherwise would be. That doesn't mean that shelters are intrinsically bad, but it's why most people would be very unhappy to find one located next to their home.

Hello everyone,

I found this website through a friend of mine. I am worried about the construction of a homeless shelter in my neighborhood. I am preparing emails to local congress officials and other political people and I would like to know if anyone else has experienced these situations before and know of anything good to send to the town officials. Would anyone here support the construction of such a center in their neighborhoods, where children and schools are nearby? The one near me is being put up in a residential area, on a residential street. Property values will go down, sex offenders will become prevalent, there are 2 schools within a short radius of each other in the area, mental retards will be there.

I know the liberals will be coming in here calling me some sort of right wing nut job for this, but the truth is, if it were happening in your area, you would be upset too. There are children, think about the children, then say if you support it or not.

Hrmm, sending the homeless off to an island somewhere, suppose that is a better solution? Yeah thats it .. and we can spade/neuter them there.. clean up the mess. Bloody stupid poor people ought to be deleted from society.

No I don't think hiding the unfortunate people from society is any good at all. Capitalism and the bell curve demands that there is an underclass.

I reiterate...I think the source of the OP is Chickie back from the dead or some other troll...maybe that persona can post a link...a public notice of intent, a link to a town hall or city counsel meeting where it will be discussed...all Im saying is that IF what she describes is real and there is a need, I would love to see communities actually en-masse engage and actually do some good...bring about positive change for a change. We were working ina county to convert a building that hadnt (still hasnt) been occupied in over 10 years. It isnt right next to a residential area but it is down the street a little ways. It is a perfect facility...an old church building with a built in connected school with 40 rooms...up to 80 beds very confortably, 160 in a pinch. The community has a relatively manageable homeless community and we had local support arranged, medical support, grant writers lined up, required and requested no government funding...and were shot down because of citizen complaints. To this day the building sits vacant and there is still no homeless shelters or support within 30 miles. very frustrating...

This isn't a joke. If you'd really like I can scan the notification of a pubic meeting regarding the shelter to my computer and upload it to your site here. If that makes you liberals get over yourselves, I'd be happy to.

Get over your liberal bull. I make a statement that I am worried I will not know these peoples' backgrounds, and you go off on a tangent about how I am assuming they are all ex cons.

Like I said, if you want to keep doubting me, you're only making yourself look like an idiot. I will be happy to post the announcement to you.

Well, those ex-cons don't know anything about your background. They may not feel safe about you being so close to their children.

EDIT: To be serious, just go talk to a lawyer and see what your options are. There may be legal recourse you and your neighborhood can pursue if there's enough of a concern. However, you'll have better luck talking to a lawyer about it than posting on an internet forum.
