What happened to the island that Columbus landed on? On the eastern portion, there is a fairly stable and productive nation, Dominican Republic. On the western portion there is Haiti. Haiti has been a mess for as long as I can remember. We have travelled a little bit in the Caribbean and most places that fell under French rule seem to be more squared away than the other countries. Guadeloupe and the French portion of St Martin come to mind. Haiti was under French control and Dom Rep was a Spanish satellite.

Aside: My section NCO wore the 82nd combat patch for action in the Dom Rep.

Don't know whether it is true, but just read the assassinated president also had at least one eye gouged out.

Although his assassins are dead or in jail, everyone wants to know who the masterminds were.

Haiti has long been interfered with by the US

The US invaded Haiti in 1915 to make Haiti pay debts that France demanded as compensation for Haiti declaring independence. The US has screwed around with Haiti before that time and multiple times after

Imagine the US being invaded by France to force it to pay debts demanded by Great Britain for declaring independence.

The US invaded the Dom Rep more recently, 1965. How much money has been raised and sent to Haiti?

Haiti is doing its best impression of a Western Hemisphere Afghanistan, imo.

A small poor country that has leaders acting to follow the dictates of a foreign country rather than improve the country they lead will never improve. Haiti’s leaders follow the US or get removed from power

Someone just dispatched the last leader. You think the US was behind the assassination? My question has to do with the disparity between to separate counties that occupy the same island. What do you think is the cause of that disparity?

"Haiti's interim prime minister and a man who was just named prime minister are both claiming the title following Haitian President Jovenel Moïse's assassination on Wednesday.
  • Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph says "law and the constitution" designate him as prime minister.
  • But Ariel Henry, who Moïse named prime minister one day before his death, says he's actually in charge now."
"Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph and Ariel Henry, who Moïse named as prime minister on Tuesday before his death, are both claiming the title and giving disputed interviews to the press.

Joseph was the leader who announced Moïse's death, and told The New York Times on Wednesday that he was now in charge of Haiti's government. Joseph has declared a "state of siege," which closed the country's borders and instituted martial law."

Don’t know about the current event but the US has changed Haiti’s government in the last 20 years

Probably because on the Spanish side of the island the elites and the people who knew how to run society and businesses were not massacred in a racial genocide.

And what lead do we give them? Well like most of our foreign aid targets, we want to pretend that they are a democracy so we make them try to maintain a form of government that they are not capable of maintaining. In order for a liberal democracy to be appropriately maintained, you need a culture that values liberalism and where the people are sufficiently educated to carry it out. Haiti does not have such things. And the current US elite, is unwilling to engage in real politic by supporting an authoritarian dictator who can maintain stability and provide the type of stability that allows a society to develop.

Well a good first start is that the Dominicans speak a proper real language which gives them access to centuries of knowledge they can study.

Leave the country alone, let it sink or swim without the negative US influence

I would agree. But American leftists and even rightists from time to time believe that democracy is the key to everything and whenever the Haitian government falls the left will stupidly allow anyone who can float to America to live here as an illegal alien.

The Dominican Republic solved refugee crises from Haiti by declaring anyone who had no legal ancestors could not claim citizenship and deported Haitians.

So yes we need to let Haiti run their affairs but we also need to make sure they can’t come here when their governments fail

US leftists do not run US foreign policy. Claims of the US exporting democracy to any country except right after WW2 is a lie to make US citizens feel good.

The US does not care about democracy in Central America or South America. It wants governments that follow US interests, when they do not they get warned, if they do not correct their path they get changed. US media claims it was to support democracy and the American people in general accept it and move on

Not mired in near civil war doesn't equate a stable paradise

its more complicated than that....Americans and Colombians were involved and a dissident Venezuelan named Tony that owned a firm that provided security equipment to law enforcement,,,,
