Hey you all!

Hey everyone!

I'm actually from Portugal, and one of the reasons I registered here was my rising interest in American politics, and I was hoping that by doing so, I could have a good source of information, and, as well, seeing other points of view.

One of the things that I find most interesting is the difference between the concept of "right" and "left", when comparing different political systems. For example, here in Portugal I would consider myself as being on the right, but, in the USA, definitely a Democrat.

Anyway, I hope I have a nice time here!

PS: I apologize in advance for any mistake in my sentences!

I'm a US citizen, I'm far left in terms of American politics and global politics. As for your observation, the rightward shift started at the end of Ford's presidency, but it really began after Ronald Reagan's election in 1980 (much like after Margaret Thatcher in the UK), the whole US economic system moved to the far right, and the New Deal was essentially demolished (The last remaining vestige of it is Social Security). This came during the 50-70's as the wealthy intellectuals began seriously reconsidering neoliberalism, and finally the charismatic, dyed-in-the-wool neoliberal Ronald Reagan made his way into the presidency. Thirty or forty years later, we're now dealing with the imprudent decisions made (and are continuing to be made), and on two fronts. Firstly, we're dealing with the massive instabilities associated to an end of the New Deal (i.e. destruction of social safety nets, maintenance of infrastructure, etc) that existed prior to the New Deal, so same issues (i.e. the neoliberal ideology of President Coolidge) that lead to the Great Depression and was why the New Deal was created. Now the US has to deal with all of that, and work towards solutions on major issues, like global warming. Ugh.

World politics and US politics is in a not-so-nice situation, by my estimation. A lot of flawed ideologies won on a lot of crucial issues, from neoliberal, neoconservative capitalism in the West to authoritarian socialism in China to salafi Islam in the middle-east, and neofascists are cropping up all over the West and Russia with the failing of neoliberalism --a lot of which can be traced back into each other. Bad decisions beget other bad decisions.
