Harvard’s Endowment

I don’t understand something here.
Endowment is defined as :Endowments may generally be described as assets (usually cash accounts that are invested in equities or bonds, or other investment vehicles) set aside so that the original assets (known as the “corpus”) grow over time as a result of income earned from interest on the underlying invested funds.

Harvard is reported to have over 50 billion in endowments. What effect will pulling 3 billion in Federal funds have on that size egg? Invested prudently, that money will last as long as there is money.
 
I think the right question to ask is: If Harvard doesn’t find research to be worthy of funding from its own endowment then why should the public pay for it?

I think the right question to ask is: Why do you support a President that extorts private entities? If he did the same thing to Fox News/Nascar would you approve?
 
Harvard needs the money so that they can support and endorse more anti-Jew protests. It's really just that simple.
 
I believe some funds are restricted such that the corpus is not permitted to be used, only the income. Im not defending Harvard. I've seen small colleges close, and yet they were providing access to education to the lower income students that weren't Harvard eligible. Seems to me that federal funds would be well suited going to support those schools and students, rather than a school that has billions already.
 
My understanding is the endowments are mostly donations and bequests that are earmarked by the donors for specific things, like tuition for economically disadvanged kids, academic scholarships, sports, architectural preservation, etc and cannot be used differently.
 
The interest income has to be huge, @ 3% that’s over 1 billion.
 
80% of the endowment is earmarked for things including research. 20% is discretionary. In addition to that, Harvard brings in $6.5 billion in revenue annually. They have more than enough money to pay for their research.

My understanding is they use the interest to fulfill the conditions of the bequests.

It is their research. They’re the ones doing it. And if they don’t think the research is worthy of being funded on their own dime then we shouldn’t pay for it either.

So if they develop a cure or treatment for a specific cancer or Alzheimer's and you or a loved one could benefit you would take a pass because it's" theirs".

No. I question the value of the research they’re relying on federal grants to pay for because even Harvard doesn’t believe it’s worthy of funding themselves.

You are wrong. The research they do is a combination of private and federal dollars. Not one or the other.

I’m not wrong. Harvard has a $53 billion endowment and $6.5 billion in annual revenue. There is no reason this private institution needs public money to pay for its research.

Because Harvard’s research saves lives and advances other science that benefits your country.

Harvard affiliated researchers have won 161 Nobel Prizes.

Their discoveries in medicine alone are too numerous to list.

But you can read up...

So America is giving up funding life saving medical research? Giving up on having some of the world's top scientists working on stuff that will benefit your country?

It’s right to question why a private institution with a $53 billion endowment and $6.5 billion in annual revenue needs a dime from the Federal government for research. That is money better spent by the NIH to do its own research rather than lavishing a private institution with taxpayer dollars to fund research of dubious value. The fact that Harvard isn’t paying for it already strongly implies that what these grants are funding is folly.
