Homeless not only ones contributing to Portland's trash problem
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland has a big trash problem. You see it on the streets, along the interstates, and scattered in parks. So, who's tossing all of it? It's easy to point the finger at homeless people, but the answer isn't so simple.

Al Held lives in a camper, just off 33rd Avenue in Northeast Portland. His is one of the tidier spots. In front of him and behind him, there's litter as far as the eye can see. Some of it was dumped there just hours before we met him.

"There was a guy driving some big semi-truck, like a moving semi-truck, and there was a guy in the back of it and was rolling down the street, and he just starting throwing stuff out," said Held.

The founder of Adopt One Block is named Frank Moscow. I guess that's where you got the idea there were socialists involved? 😆

It sounds as though the city is quite happy to have dumpers polluting anywhere the homeless people are. How about catching these dumpers and giving them a heavy fine, enough to wreck their business model?

And provide garbage services to homeless people DUH. I don't care if it sounds socialist, or if it is.

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Me, I am thankful for people like @Schism who see and chase phantom socialists everywhere they look. It provided some much needed entertainment, like watching a dog chase a thrown ball.

Hey @Schism there’s a socialist to your left. Fetch!

It's always to the left, isn't it? By now Schism must have learned a layout tumble to catch those socialists unawares!

I am very old (84).

All my life I had heard about how wonderful Oregon was.

It is a beautiful state.

A lot of rain.

Nice people. Really nice people, who would (jokingly?) say, "Come visit, but please don't stay."

I had never thought that I would live to see the day that the word "Oregon" would be synonymous with chaos & craziness.

All one can do is to shake one's head at what has happened and is happening to the United States of America.

In a world where, for some, the word "Trump" has become synonymous with honesty and truth, words have lost their meaning.

No, the socialist committee is the Portland city gov't.

I agree! There are already ordinances that impose fines for dumping and littering, they just need to be enforced.

But you would agree we need to apply the law equally, right? I mean, all trash dumpers need to be fined, correct?

And provide garbage services to homeless people DUH. I don't care if it sounds socialist, or if it is.

I don't get free garbage services from the city, why should anyone else? In fact, you have a choice, subscribe to a trash hauling service or take it to the dump. The dump charges $12 minimum, so you have to pay either way.

There's no free garbage disposal in Oregon that I'm aware of.

LOL! Their not to my left, they're directly above and below you!

Have a great holiday!

It's still a beautiful state with god awful cities, although Bend is nice and tidy; very upscale.

But the real beauty here is the great outdoors, hundreds of waterfalls, and a craggy shoreline that looks like a postcard.

Hey! Are you a Brigham City native? I saw the Northern Utah sign.

I agree, before I retired last July I had several store locations in Washington and Oregon with my distribution center in Hillsboro. The drive in from the airport was always a shock to me, so much trash along the highway and surface streets, embarrassing.

No, the socialist committee is the Portland city gov't.

Do you have any sense of humor at all?

I agree! There are already ordinances that impose fines for dumping and littering, they just need to be enforced.

Actually no. If homeless people "put out the trash" and the city doesn't take it, for whatever reason, then I'm not inclined to fine them at all.

Plus, they likely can't pay. What are you going to do, evict them?

I don't get free garbage services from the city, why should anyone else?

You should, and so should everyone else.

Plainly they need it. Making the regular collection weekly instead of bi-weekly is rather obvious too.

Homeless people should give a damn, particularly when provoked by someone throwing away meat (unsanitary). I'm sure some of them have phones. Maybe they're not being taken seriously by police, or they're afraid of police?

I have to travel all over the state for work and am in Portland regularly.

It's just awful. The piles and mounds of trash are environmental disasters.

Rough day for the OP. Trash in the streets of Portland, can't display a noose on his front porch anymore...

Is that an acceptable criteria for applying laws and ordinances? Really?

So only fine those who can afford it, and the rest don't have to comply?

Who pays for this? Why don't I get free garbage collection?

I don't know but if it helps your narrative I'm sure you'll invent a fear.

Yes, if it's trash or sewage.

So only fine those who can afford it, and the rest don't have to comply?

Of course not. Collect the trash, and nobody pays specifically for trash. Someone will be paying (eg income tax) but that's the lesser of two evils.

Who pays for this? Why don't I get free garbage collection?

I couldn't care less. If you even want free garbage collection, write to your local government.

I don't know but if it helps your narrative I'm sure you'll invent a fear.

If someone dumped old refrigerators and rotting food on YOUR doorstep, I presume you'd complain to someone. And it would probably be the police.

It sounds like the homeless are letting themselves be victims. Either they're afraid of police, OR the laws against dumping on vacant or squatted blocks are too weak. Rather than accuse me of "invention" how about you suggest a reason. I say again: if it was out front of your house, you'd complain to someone.

I know, right?

Next thing you know a POTUS would actually try to overthrow an election and STILL retain millions of supporters.

Crazy times, huh?

No, no, no!

That's not craziness. That's democracy in action.
All the other stuff is the crazy stuff ;)

Yes, if it's trash or sewage.

Why should anyone pay for it if the city is willing to give it away for free?

Why should anyone pay taxes if a chosen group is absolved from contributing to society?

Why should I even get up and go to work if the gov't will supply me with everything I need?

If we all stop working to receive gov't handouts, where will the money come from to pay us what we're due?

I suspect what you truly need, no government can provide.

As for your message of suckling on the government teet, go preach that in the myriad of "red" states that suck more per capita off the government than most anyone.

Some dude working for a private company throws trash on the street, must be that socialism.

Listen, right wingers: America is not socialist. There's no city in America that is socialist. You don't know what that word means, so you should probably stop using it.

Because trash in the street is bad for everybody.
