Happy Meal Toys Endangered Species In San Francisco

But but but wont somebody PLEASE think of the CHILDREN?

Like their parents maybe.

You might laugh, but McDonald's is seen as quality food in places like Poland. Hell, it's about the only place you can get a decent salad.

That sucks :(

The government food guidelines are responsible for far, far, far more damage than McDonald's. Their food pyramid was a travesty.

This was not an issue I addressed. But you are right, the recent revision is better.

If toys are a problem, they have to go after every type of food producer... not just McDonald's.

.

I agree that they should be fair with this and go after all toys that are packaged with unhealthy meals. I don't have a problem with a toy in a box of cheerios though.

However, ultimately, this, I believe, is reasonable for a town, city, county to do, regardless of whether anyone outside the town agrees.

LMFAO First off, one doesn't need to elimnate HFCS from their diets entirely. Everything in moderation. Secondly, making ketchup and mustard is stupid easy. Third, extremely easy to buy bread locally made without preservatives and other additives from a bakery. Fourth, if you make your own bread, you need not stand there for 4 - 5 hours. The actually labor time is only minutes in different segments. Fifth, if you do make your own bread, you need only do so every few days. Hell, make a bunch of dough and freeze it. Thaw and bake when you need it. Easy peasy. Also, you can make dough and keep it in the fridge for days, taking out only handfuls to bake for a meal.

So yeah, not really all that difficult.

It's easy for you to say to eat HFCS in moderation when it is in everything prepackaged. How can you consume moderately when the label doesn't specify how much of a certain ingredient is in there?

Actually, even local bakeries use HFCS in their bread. It is a sugar and sold as such. The labor for making bread is longer than a few minutes for each segment. You're just wanting to blame the parents solely for the situation and nothing I say will change your mind. It's not the food manufacturers or the government's fault for creating the situation to begin with according to you.

The parents are to blame, they buy the food and let their kids sit around the house all day.

I make bread sometimes it does not take hours of labor to make it. You heat the milk up, mix the ingredients and at most knead the bread for several minutes, maybe a little longer depending on the type of bread. Then you let it sit for around a hour or so, maybe 24 hours in some cases, then you punch the dough down and let rise for and depending on the type of dough you make you throw it into a pan. If you got a kitchen aid mixture or even a food processor then that involves less labor.

Then don't eat pre-packaged crap.

Some may. It's easy enough to ask. The one I use does not.

Well, it sure doesn't take me very long.

You're just wanting to blame the parents solely for the situation and nothing I say will change your mind.
I'm not "wanting" to do anything. I speak only the truth. If the parents buy the food, cook the food, and feed the food to the kids, then it is solely the parent's fault for what the kid consumes. There is no way around this.

What situation? Where parents are too lazy to cook their own food, read labels, or educate themselves? No, that's not the govt or manufacturer's fault.

HFCS is just one type of sugar, albeit manmade. There is cane and beet sugar which is somewhat better for you since it does trigger the receptors in the brain that tell you that you're full.

Yes, because we all know that parents that work 40 plus hours a week have time to make everything from scratch and the food manufacturers nor the government are responsible for what they put into the prepackaged food.

Then don't eat pre-packaged crap.

It is the government's fault for putting out an unhealthy diet that parents, schools, and food manufacturers cook to. It's the food manufacturer's fault for using HFCS in every prepackaged food since it's cheaper then cane and beet sugar. The lobbies for the corn industry put into place the import limits on cane and beet sugar plus the high tariffs for importation. Are the parent's responsible for that?

They're responsible for purchasing it. Or not. Their choice. They could always cook their own goddamn food and make sure their kid gets some exercise.

Again, cook according to what guidelines? Oh that's right it's the government's nutritional guidelines that have been shown to be unhealthy. Let me guess, the parents are responsible for those guidelines right?

Who the **** cooks to any federal guidelines? No one I know of.

Actually, a lot of people cook low fat, high carb diets as mandated under the federal guidelines. Not me though, since I cook how my grandparents and their parents etc... cook.

I've never seen anyone with the "federal guidelines" laying with their cookbooks. In fact, I doubt many even know or care what the federal guidelines are.

There's a plethora of information out there, if someone CHOOSES to follow one dietary regimine over another, that's their choice. And their responsibility. It's not the government's job to tell us what to eat.

I agree with a fair bit of what you state but...

1. Why not Cheerios too? They are competitors for the same dollars, and it's not exactly health food.

2. The town, city, state or Feds doing this is overkill. This is the personal choice of the parents and/or individual. What's next in store? Frankly, this is beyond incredible, but it's SF.

And what about Chucky Cheese? It's a carnival atmosphere. Will they need remove all games and entertainment?

I wouldn't call cheerios health food, but it is healthier than mcdonalds, that is enough of a reason for me.

I believe communities should have great flexibility in setting their own standards.

Come to think of it, what about the McDonald's playplaces? Or any other fast food joint that has playplaces? Are they going to be disallowed too?

God, this kind of bull**** infuriates me

Ultimately, the problem isn't so much with what - or even how much - we eat. It's about how much we move around afterward (or don't).

You know, back in the day, people ate GIGANTIC meals full of butter and fat and lard, and there weren't nearly as many overweight folks as there are today, and that's all about what modern Americans do (or don't!) when we're not eating.

Typical Daily Menu in a Victorian Home (1865)

BREAKFAST––Three quarters of a pint of coffee, four ounces of bread, one ounce of butter, two eggs, or four ounces of meat, or four ounces of fish.

LUNCH––Two ounces of bread, two ounces of meat, or poultry, or game, two ounces of vegetables, and a half pint of beer, or a glass of wine.

DINNER––Half a pint of soup, a quarter of a pound of fish, half a pound of meat, a quarter of a pound of poultry, a quarter of a pound of savory dishes or game, two ounces of vegetables, two ounces of bread, two ounces of pastry or roasts, half an ounce of cheese, a quarter of a pound of fruit, one pint of wine, one glass of liqueur, one cup of coffee or tea; at night one glass of spirits and water.

A Compost of Rich Materials For All Land-owners, about Domestic Animals and Domestic Economy; Farm Buildings; Gardens, Orchards, and Vineyards; and all Farm Crops, Tools, Fences, Fertilization, Draining, and Irrigation - edited by Solon Robinson - 1865.

Take a look at "the great mid-American cookbook of its day" (Buckeye Cookery, And Practical Housekeeping: Compiled From Original Recipes. Minneapolis, Minn.: Buckeye Pub. Co., 1877). The section on "Seasonal Bills of Fare" contains pages and pages of daily menu suggestions - go on and page through; you won't believe how much food the typical American consumed 150 years ago.

As a people, we've become sedentary to the point of endangering our national physical health.

The government's fault? If this article said all school districts around the country will discontinue unhealthy foods in lieu of a new federal law, I'm most certain that would be an overreach of it's boundaries. Did you really just blame the government for making double quarter pounders and children's meals with no more nutritional value than fat and carbohydrates.

And like I said, you folks are so off topic. As I pointed out, its an ordinance. Much like no alcohol purchases after 9. Like I'm not allowed to park on the same street my taxes paid for after 11 pm. Like no "non-outdoor treated" furniture on one's porch. Like no strip clubs. Like no porn shops. Like no liquor period. Some folks get so excited when they thing they see another excuse to say the government's too big!

The federal government forbids any use of marijuana. Many keep bringing up its legalization for tax revenue. If I, as an adult, am disallowed to make a personal choice on the federal level. Why can we not limit one's choices on the local level (like we always do - think in the context of ordinances).... In regards to a happy meal, my kids can still have one, even in the small local government of SF. They are not making them illegal. Simply making them unappealing to children in a small area by request of it's citizens with aim to protect their children from their impressionable minds being influenced by a "process for profit" food establishment. Did I just compare weed to a happy meal? After comparing the long term health effects of both, I'd have been silly not too.

Who made the farm subsidies for farmers to produce corn no matter the market conditions? Who put on the high tariffs and import limits on sugar? Who created the nutritional guidelines? In all cases it is the federal government.

So your saying San Fransisco is the Federal Government? That ordinances set federal precedent. I guess I'm missing it entirely. I must need a nap.

Oh - and the government did all that because of the adherent influence of corporate lobbying done by establishments exactly like McDonalds.

They are allowed to have influence and SF is not?

So now its I do not have enough experience?
Yeah, it is.

I am sure that you will avoid answering this question that I have already asked more than once but I will ask again. Are you saying your parents caved into your demands when ever you pestered or nagged them for something after they told you no?
I dont see what it has to do with anything, but no they didnt cave to every demand I made.

I think you are you are just trying to excuse lousy parenting. Lousy parents do not know how to tell their kids no and do not punish their children when they keep pestering or nagging. If you punish kids for pestering and nagging after being told no they will stop pestering and nagging. Its how you get a child to stop doing any undesirable behavior. You have to be an authoritarian when it comes to kids.
You only have to be authoritarian if you cant get results any other way. In my opinion, an authoritarian parent is one who has failed in any other method and has to resort to dictatorial methods to get what they want done. Sometimes the iron fist needs to be brought down, but if you try to run your kids with it, they'll end up hating you.

The difference between your Spielburg rant is that unlike someone who not seen all of Spielberg's movies and making a criticism is that anybody has grown up around a parental figure all their life knows how their parental figure has punished them when they did something wrong. So these analogies you keep bringing up are pointless and unrelated. If your parents were great parents then you just have to do what they did when they raised you.
I know what they did WRONG and I can learn from that as well.

My parents went the authoritarian route. That created extreme tension in the household as I did things out of fear of being screamed at, not out of respect for them. Needless to say, we have an extremely poor relationship to this day because of their attitudes in that respect. One thing parents (and people in general) seem to forget is that respect is earned, not given.

What about the non fast food places that do not just cater to everybody else? Hooters encourage men to eat unhealthy food. Ballparks encourage people to stuff down hotdogs, pizza, hamburgers and other unhealthy foods and lots of beer, Even strip clubs aimed at women probably encourage women to drink lots of alcohol.

Dear god, this is asinine. Why allow a trickle, if it has the potential to turn into a flood. Apathy is what will bring about the end of our freedom, not jack boots marching down our streets.

Btw, weed is well on its way to being legal in CA. Weed is in, toys are out. Just business as usual.

Yeah, it is.
I would hardly call 8 hours a day watching kids very little experience.

I dont see what it has to do with anything, but no they didnt cave to every demand I made.

What did they do if you kept pestering them for something after they said no?
Give you a spanking? Tell you to shut the **** up, slap you, send you to the corner, ground your or some other punishment?

Are you a parent? have you dealt with more than one child? What are your experience with kids? See we can play this do you have and kids and what kind of experience do you have game too.

Pobre, making sure kids dont stab themselves with pencils is not the same thing as parenting. You are babysitting and babysitting is not the same thing as parenting. I did the same job with kindergarteners.

What did they do if you kept pestering them for something after they said no?

Im curious why this matters.

Are you a parent?
Biologically, no.

have you dealt with more than one child?
Yes

What are your experience with kids?
I raised (and I do mean raised) six nieces and seven nephews from the time I was 12 to about five years ago. I also worked as a counselor for kids at a daycare center, working mainly with very young children. I currently work for an assisted living facility that houses people with autism, most of them have a mental operating age somewhere between five and 13.

See we can play this do you have and kids and what kind of experience do you have game too.
Check?

This is what many people fail to understand.Unless there is some huge major event they will always use baby steps. Doing everything at once is usually a bad idea you have to do it pieces.
